U locks that don't require a key when locking them
 

I am not sure if I am posting in the right topic, but here goes. I am trying to find u locks that dont require a key when you lock them. Yes, unlocking can have a key; however, when you lock them it would have some sort of snap-in mechanism.

Suckiest ride ever. Last click-in lock I've ever used. As far as the new app enabled locks, just one more thing to go very very wrong at the very very very wrong time.

Frame mounted ring locks , you leave the key in while the lock is open , to ride..
then you close it around the rear wheel and remove the key.

Absolutely! My lock does not require a key to lock but I have it in the lock when I lock it for just that reason.

Definitely sounds like a well thought out plan, bikepro. I would try that on my car door, but I keep an entry key in my billfold.

skylock also has a capacitive touch pad if for some reason you dont have your phone on you.

Just remember. If the lock doesn't require a key to lock it, it can most likely be shimmed to be opened. (Aka a less secure lock.)

I was looking at a few combination U-Locks the other day. I didn't get one, but a few are out there.

As far as the "Snap Lock" feature, read (watch) about opening a Master Combo Lock with a soda can.

The problem is that the "snap feature" can often be forced out, and thus your lock will come open. And, thus "high security" locks have avoided it.

Your house door locks have a similar "snap feature", but have a pin that can be pushed in when you close the door, but once the lock pops open again, the pin behind the lock blocks it from being "shimmed" (opened with a credit card).

I'm not sure why U-locks haven't incorporated a similar snap & lock feature. However, as mentioned above, forcing a person to have the key isn't bad.

My one stolen bike... before U-Locks. I lost my keys the day I lost my bike. I believe I had dropped them near the bike and someone picked them up and walked away with my bike.

The reason U-locks require keys to lock is twofold.

1- as mentioned above, it prevents people from locking the bike without the key in possession and getting stranded.
2- like with your front door, a deadbolt offers greater security than a spring bolt. Portable locks with a spring bolt can be defeated easily by a knowledgeable thief. So serious makers will design with a true deadbolt design.

Just out of curiosity, why not a combination lock? It's also one less key to carry around.
