Movies and TV and Bicycles......

I am into classic movies. I just watched The Invisible Man (1933) in the theater and saw few bicycle related things.

1. The famous special effect where the bicycle rides with no rider. (I have always wondered what type of bike this was)
2. All the cyclists in the snow in the manhunt for the Invisible Man.!
3. At the party or whatever at the ballroom.....there is a huge sign that reads....Welcome....ROVER Bicycle Club. This was my favorite part. Nice piece of history there.

Among some of my other favorites:

Kermit in The Muppet Movie riding his bike.
E.T. over the moon....aka Bob Haro
The Goonies bike scene with the Cyndi Lauper music

Oh....and TV.....The old FOX short lived sitcom "Get a Life?" starring Chris Elliot where he is a 30 year old paper boy and rides a old balloon tire bike.

What are some other obscure bicycle related TV and Movie references you have seen?

Robin Williams in RV - That movie looks dumb early but has a strong finish to be pretty good

Don't forget the bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Not necessarily obscure, but...
  • Blade Runner - Chew's eye shop scene with Roy and Leon, pack of cyclists swarming by.
  • French Connection - Doyle picks up a gal on a bike. She's still there the next day, with her bike, in Doyle's apartment when Roy Scheider's character (Russo) drops by.
  • The Great Escape - James Corburn's character swipes a bike after escaping. Or maybe it was a long term loan, if he was in Holland.
  • Beetlejuice - Lydia bicycles home from school.
  • Audrey Hepburn, behind the scenes in many movies. Totes adorbs.

If you are into classic film then you have surely seen "The Bicycle Thief."

Jerry Seinfeld had a bike hanging on the walls if his various apartments. IIRC, it was a Klein MTB is later years.

Laverne & Shirley riding through Milwaukee at the end of opening credits is a classic. IMO, best TV sitcom theme ever. Their expressions at the freeze perfectly captures the joy of riding a bicycle:

And doesn't Lisa Simpson ride a bike home in the opening credits to the show?

Winning. Sedgwick has some of the least trouble making it to freedom. He ends up crossing the border into Spain with the help of a guide and is met their by a basque fighter.

There was a bamboo bike or two on Gilligan's Island

...and various other pedaled bamboo inventions

And Fred Flintstone's bike. Unlike his car, it actually has pedals.

Kevin Kline rides a bicycle in In & Out and Dave and a motorized bicycle in Wild Wild West.

A Midsummer Night's Dream also features bicycles, but Kevin Kline isn't riding one.

He almost turned down the stage production of “The Pirates of Penzance,” for which he won Tony and Drama Desk awards, but was riding his bike through Central Park in New York and changed his mind. And he wasn’t sure about “The Big Chill,” but it was Streep who encouraged him to do it.

Saw a new-to-me bicycle sighting last night, "Timebomb", 1991 thriller with Michael Biehn. Looks like a typical mountain bike of that era, possibly a Univega although I can't quite make out the logo. Correct number of letters but the logo design doesn't look like Univega's. The YouTube version is poor, but in the televised copy I watched it sure looked like a Univega splatter paint of that era. Skip to the 9:35 mark of the video.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned mentioned this one - Vittorio De Sica's "The Bicycle Thief " , from 1948 .
One of the best movies, ever, and bicycles were only part of the story :~) :

My sister & I used to ride along singing "Da na na na naa naaa, da na na na naa naaa" to that music while riding our bikes.

Speaking of E.T., if the kids' bikes were flying through the air because of E.T.'s magic, why were they still pedaling?

Recently saw a TV ad for some liquor. Maybe Hennessey. It features someone playing the role of Major Taylor.
