Re-read the last statement you made, add to that the fact that wool has outstanding heat retention qualityes, then notice I live in florida, heat/ humidity capital of the world. Hence my statement.

No special instructions for any of my clothes, including my wool socks (wool socks rule!!) I'm a guy. But also, as a guy, I have my fair share of lazy built in-- so I bought one of those washer bags ladies use to wash bras and the like. After a ride, the socks, gloves, skullcap, etc, all go in the bag, get zipped up, and washed with the rest of the load. Then I don't have to dig through the washer to find the glove that's stuck to the inside of a shirt somewhere. Hlade's Law in effect.

If I'm going to wash the things that cover my feet every ride, I'm certainly going to wash the thing that covers my head. The removable pads in the helmet get washed weekly.
Of note, also a year-round wool sock wearer. My feet stay much more comfortable in wool socks, even on summer rides here where the ending temp is a good bit north of 100º. My wife was skeptical of wool socks until I bought her a pair, and she's now wool-only. |
Finally, a topic I get get my teeth into - socks. Big fan of wool here in all seasons in weights appropriate for the temperature from -20 F to 100 F.

I wash my cycling clothing by hand. Warm water and some laundry detergent. Put into the washer and spin for 1-2 minutes and hang to dry. I don't like washing machine for two reasons. First, I don't have enough cycling clothing to do a full load on gentle cycle. Second, I won't put really stinky cycling clothing in with regular clothes as I have had the stink spread to other clothes. I have tossed cycling socks into the regular warm water wash since these aren't stinky and the machine is superior to hand washing. I wash my gloves and Halo headband. There's nothing like the stink of gloves; it's worse than the stink of a jersey.

Cold water wash, hang dry. Same for jerseys, shorts with chamois, wool base layers, synthetic running clothes, etc.

For wool, cool wash setting, hang to dry. If you use an HE washer, remember that the key to those things is to NOT USE TOO MUCH DETERGENT(!!!!) I hang my normal cycling socks (DeFeet Aireater) to dry, too. I think they last longer that way. I use trouser hangers, the kind with the clips. |

I remember a comedian saying "I'm never moving of my parent's house. One thing is that they have an amazing washer and dryer machine for my clothes. It cleans them, drys them, and folds them and puts the clean clothes on my bed."
I was jesting actually. This company had that on their tag and it stirred up quite a lot of carp. http://imgick.syracuse.com/home/syr-...197-mmmain.jpg Indonesian clothes company sorry for 'sexist' labels - BBC News |
inside out, cold water, low-heat dryer...use a soap safe for wool. enzymes don't know the difference between soiled wool and wool fibers.
|
3 ingredient hand soap mixed with water becomes nice laundry detergent. Same with baking soda. The later removes odors but not grease/oil though.

This topic not only had potential; its potential has now been realized.

I hand wash in cold water with Kookaburra Woolwash (now just called Kookaburra Wash). In the summer, I wash them in a sink. When I pull out the rest of my wool clothing, I normally just use put a 5 gal bucket in the bath tub. I don't rinse, as it isn't necessary with this product. I also tend to throw my biking gloves in as well, since they all say to hand wash.

How do you wash your wool socks? Handwash/washing machine. And how do you let them dry?
