I found that by using lower handle bars, I ride better against wind

I was out yesterday at the Bay Trail in San Mateo, where there is always a lot of wind, blowing from south to north. This one cyclist passed me and I noticed that he was placing his hands on the lower handle bars.

Now I didn't even know that my bike had lower handle bars. Or if I did, I must have forgot. A lot of mountain bikes don't have lower handle bars. But this is a road bike and so now it's different.

So I tried using the lower handle bars against the wind, and I felt like I was riding more efficiently. In addition to that, it was even a better workout, but a faster and less frustrating workout. My heart rate was getting higher, my breathing was getting deeper, and additionally I felt better and was able to ride faster and more efficiently.

Now I wonder if you're supposed to use the lower handle bars when going up hill. Against the wind, the lower handle bars work for me. Now I know it sounds like I'm contradicting myself, because I had to rise my stem a little. But when I use the lower handle bars, it doesn't feel as bad, it actually feels like I'm giving my body a good stretch for a short period of time.

Does your bike have the curvy bars like they ride in the Tour de France?

Lower handlebars on a mtb? Are there two sets on it, or did you actually just lower the bars, I'm lost.

You reduce your frontal area when you ride on the drops. Makes you more aerodynamic. It may also change the angle at the hips which may help you apply power better. The fact that your heart rate was higher tells me you are not only more aerodynamic but you are putting out more power in that position.

Exactly. My heart rate was up, but for some reason it felt like an easier or more enjoyable ride. I guess that just happens from the aerodynamic position. Before, it was more of a drag and I hated the wind. Still was a workout, but very slow and still not quite as good.

And while the word "troll" is perhaps over used or even misused at times, internet forums are full of them.

Are they eye drops? If so, that's your problem right there.

The Bubba in the saddle is also the mass that has to be pushed through the air .. You would be faster if shaped like a Fish,
which is proved at the IHPVA Meet in Nevada every year .
