How to store cycling clothing in the closet
Hey there folks. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
So I decided to clean out my closet and found some cycling gear I haven't worn in years. Donating a bunch but also obviously need a better way to store jerseys & bibs. So I'm looking for some ideas and wondering what other people do. I've had all my stuff in wire pull out baskets but clearly isn't really working. I used to hang bibs on a hangar too, but that was annoying too. Probably just have too much gear but curious anyways what you all do with the gear in the closets! Thanks in advance. Matt |
I jam it in a dresser drawer, then brace myself against the bed to push it closed with my foot.

I just fold my jerseys and bibs and put them in the drawer. Done.

I use a cheap wooden drying rack in the cellar, for what I will be using. That way after I wash something, I hang it on the rack and it stays there until I use it. That eliminates handling it one extra time. I get changed next to the rack.
Something not going to be used just gets folded on a shelf in the cellar. Still, close to where I change, next to the rack. |
Unlike wool there is no insect that has evolved to Eat Polyester and Nylon in its life cycle.
|
For wool I use cedar balls soaked in cedar oil, in a drawer.
For synthetic, gravity is your friend. |
Jerseys, bibs and jackets on hangers in the closet. The rest in a drawer or two.

My biggest problem is seeing a cool jersey I used to wear 25 years ago and realizing it's a "M" and I'm a now "XL" (for cycling only). I should give old stuff away, but I think "I wore this Descente on a ride in Ireland or in Tennessee", I guess I can hope for a miracle weight loss though and relive my youth.

I keep a 22 gallon plastic tote near the garage door for exercise clothes. I change into cycling gear or whatever there and when I return I toss it on the floor. Form follows function.
|
My bottoms (shorts, tights, leg warmers) go into one large duffle bag.
My tops (jerseys, some jackets) go into another large duffle bag. BIG duffle bags! |
I do all my bicycle work and preparation in my basement. I hang everything up with clothes hangers and hooks screwed into the joists. Stuff that gets damp is hung below a hot air register.
|
Amazing thread.
Should be a sticky. |
I put them in a couple of clearish plastic boxes, with "Bike Clothes" written on a sheet of paper taped to the side facing out. The boxes are on a shelf above the hanging clothes.

When you ride a recumbent you dont have to waste money on high priced clothes that you need to protect yourself from a DF bike. My t-shirts and rugby shorts lay in the dresser drawer over the winter. They dont need special storage.

Nice thanks folks! I love the idea of a cycling-specific closet and if I ever build a house will definitely work that in! If I had hanging room to spare I guess I'd hang it all up, but then my wife would constantly be reminding me that i have waaaayy too much! I probably need to junk 3/4 of the bibs I have and get just a couple nicer and newer ones and that would clean up a lot. But hey, isn't having the matching kit worth something even if just mentally!??!?!
I hadn't really thought of the plastic bins/totes, but that actually is a pretty solid idea, especially for stuff that I'm not really wearing at the moment (either seasonal or just out of rotation, or frankly too small until I get back into shape!). I think that thinning out the current drawer would make stuff a lot more manageable. The question I hate to ask, so I'm not even going to go there, is how many jerseys and bibs we all have that we really don't need... I'm sure I've got many times too much gear! Ride safe folks! And happy holidays! -- Matt. |

Absolutely. I used to keep my cycling clothes in a small pile on the kitchen floor. Now I know better.
i keep all my daily cycling clothes in the attic but now i may rethink that |
I use a hanging shoe organizer like this:
https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...Qi4h0k06quKYyN I match up bibs and socks and wrap them in matching jersey and vest and stuff them in one of the cubbies. That way I can just grab a wadded up kit without turning on the light and waking Mrs. Caloso. |
I kept all my bike specific clothing in bankers boxes on garage shelves. Works great, tough a tad cold in the winter.

Matt Short sleeve jerseys, long-sleeve jerseys, long sleeve thermal jerseys, aero jerseys, then shorts. Jerseys are sorted in fit order. Anything which isn't wearable is in a different closet. Few work outfits (a total of five polo shirts in three colors) leave room for more cycling clothes. Miscellaneous (leg warmers, gloves, rain gear) live in my commuting panier. Tomorrow's clothes hang by the back door so I don't disturb my wife when I wake before sunrise. That said although my wife called me the Imelda Marcos of jerseys I don't have over 20 which fit. People with real jersey collections probably have bigger problems. |
