Silly brand names

Of course the Tiagra / Viagra thing is too obvious, but here's another one... Shimano Alivio. My Dad used to sing "Molly Malone" and reading the word Alivio makes me sing the song in my head every single time.

As she wheeled her wheel-barrow,
Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"
What's your favorite misfired brand name?

Planet Bike. I find the name stupid and completely uncreative. Like Planet Hollywood.

Dura Ace. 7400 & 7800 were so good that the association with quality has made it seem less awkward, but the font still doesn't conceal this goony name.

"Assos" is an awesome name for bike shorts though IMO.

At first I didn't understand why they chose an alligator (/crocodile?) as their company, logo, but then I remembered they were "Hand-Built in the Rockies."

Even before they bought up the Globe brand before promptly discontinuing every model that was at all interesting, even back in the days of "American Flyers" I always thought "Specialized" was a cheesy name that lacked imagination.

Devinci. I've read the company's name was originally Da Vinci, as in Leonardo, but got changed. Why would you change your company's name to a misspelling?

Huffy. C'mon, that's a Groucho Marx joke. If you don't like it you can leave in a Huffy. If that's too soon, leave in a minute and a Huffy.

Ditto, Specialized. And Giant. Before I resumed cycling this year after a 30-year I-hate-us I'd never heard of either. Both brand names immediately evoked images of cheap crap. Especially Giant.

Favorite odd brand names are Surly and Motobecane.

Allez. Ah-lay? Ah-lesz? Had the bike 23 years, and it always sounds inappropriate to say it out loud.

I will +1 for specialized.

A homeless man once asked me what type of bike I had at a red light. I promptly told him a specialized and he goes, "well any bike could say that, that doesnt mean anything"

Street Cred bikes. If you need "Street Cred" on your bike to give it some cred then it has no cred of its own.

On One, a British brand have a bike called the "Pompino"

Pompino is the Italian word for BL0WJ0B, It may however be effective marketing for their intended demographics.

All of those Shimano model names. Especially obvious when they are all put in a list from best to worst or the other way around.

I'm sure to be showing my age here, but I always think of a childhood game called 'Ring-O-leevio'

I had a Vassago Bandersnatch steel hardtail 29er a few years ago. I pretty much bought it used for the components from a friend and ended up selling the frame and fork shortly after.
