Vintage groupset pricing
So I've lately been trying to find the answer somewhere on the internet but can't seem to find anything. How much did groupsets back in the 70s-90s cost before/after inflation? Was a groupset such as Dura Ace 7400 comparable in price to Dura Ace 9000? My assumption is that the older groupsets were relatively cheaper due to differences in materials and less complexity but I really have no idea.

My assumption would be the opposite. Top-line components were relatively expensive, is my recollection. But I don't know the answer. I'll bet there are people in the classic and vintage sub-forum that do, though...

Look around online for the old catalogs, then go to an inflation calculator.

Back in 1973 when I bought my first good road bike, a Raleigh Professional, the Record side pull brakes sold for about $150 per set. No idea how much a full group would have cost. Keep in mind that back then a full group also included a pair of hubs and pedals. I would say that in today's dollars a full 1973 Campagnolo group like the one that came on my Professional would be more expensive than today's equivalent. Even after many years of use, all the components from that groupset are still in good working order

some even included seatposts, headsets, BBs, cables, and even in some cases ...a case. but then again, Campy was always OTT.

Definitely more expensive back then.
Though that could be due to my being a broke-@$$ed teenager back then who had enough time to ride, but not enough money to afford the good stuff. Now the inverse is true. At least 7400 lasts forever. If youth is wasted on the young, then wealth is wasted on us old farts. |

This feels like it's turned into a Campy-bash. Why?
