chain jumping

I have a problem with my drive! Am using tiagra 9 speed cassette and 9 speed hg53 chain both of which I have just replaced having had the chain jumping. The chain was worn but not excessively. Unfortunately the problem is still there! It is a internittent catching of chain which makes a hell of a noise and does this on all gears front and back and not always when there is hard power being put on! Can be soft pedalling and get a soft click and little grab of chain and then it can do an almighty clang either /or. It does this sporadically . could this be a worn freehub perhaps? The hub is a ultegra 10 speed.

Have not changed front chainrings yet as cannot see any particular wear on these. These being 50/34 tiagra chainset. The problem started quite quickly about two weeks ago and the drive had been running sweet up till then.

Any suggestions?

It is probably a worn cassette (which, I assume, is what you refer to as a "freehub"). Generally chains and cassettes see wear at a similar rate.

He said he changed his cassette, too, I believe. Could be he used a chain-break tool to install the new chain and tightened a link too much. Otherwise ... I will wait for wiser minds.

How's the jockey wheels on the rear derailleur? These can get worn too.

Is the rear derailleur lined up correctly too? Have you tried adjusting the cable using the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur.

And while you are there ensure the rear derailleur bolt is tight and the drop out hanger bolts are tight as well.

This is a very good possibility. Another is the replacement pin isn't completely set. I had a similar problem once where part of the pin was sticking out a little.

I used a sram quicklink which has never given any problems before, I must admit the though the rear derailleur is old! Its a dura ace derailleur from approx 12 year ago but as I said earlier , everything was working fine but suddenly got the jumping, hence replacing the cassette and chain. I did consider the quick link might be the problem but had same type on previous chain which worked fine till acouple of weeks ago when all the pros started. The hanger is part of frame (no bolts it's a colnago master xlite frame) and has not had any bangs etc. As I said this ios happening intermittently so would not think its the line up which has not changed before the probs started. This is why I am thinking it may be the freehub?

Sounds like simple derailleur mis-adjustment.

Could need a tune up, it could need new jockey wheels or maybe something is bent and you wouldn't know with out taking things off or maybe you would and just haven't noticed.

I would take the bike into your favorite mechanic or LBS and see if they cannot figure out what is going wrong. It is always hard to diagnose certain problems without putting hands on the bike.

Isn't this about the point where somebody usually suggests going single gear or fixie?

Does it do it on a stand? A skipping derailleur cog would probably skip as it "works" absent of tension.

"jumping" doesn't tell me much.

Where and how is it jumping? Please try to describe exactly what is happening in as much detail as you can.

For example if it's slipping or jumping on the chain rings, then maybe it's a wear or other factor there. If it's hopping all over the cassette, it might be a derailleur adjustment.

Other things may also be happening, for example, if it seems to jump with a certain regularity, say roughly every 2 crank revolutions, then maybe it's a stiff or damaged link.

So, like most things mechanical, the devil is in the details, and so is the solution.

First thing i would do is check hanger alignment.

Tight link. Sure there's other possibilities, ranging from a misadjustment to a misaligned derailleur hanger to a broken frame. But start with the easiest-to-check first. Slowly pedal backwards and see if the chain jumps when going through the jockey pulleys on the RD.
