Cycling nomenclature sometimes transcends logic and doesn't always follow established naming conventions.

If a bicycle has a saddle, why isn't the post it is attached to called the saddlepost? :p

Ok, let's sum this all up.
The shift lever or twist grip on the left hand side of your handlebar shifts the front derailleur...
notable exception : 6 speed Brompton left lever is either or between 2 cogs on a 3 speed Hub the right one is for the IGH.

together they are half step gearing ..

S-A 5 star hub left was a similar fill in between 3 widely spaced gears with 2 that filled in the gap .

True, but these are exceptions. The majority of derailleur bikes seem to have FD control on the left and RD control on the right, whether it's levers, twist grips, whatever. I'm guessing that's because we live in a world dominated by right-handed people, and RD shifting is more complicated (maybe more frequent?) than FD. People who don't ride often can benefit from a mnemonic like "right rear."
