What is a FAIR price?

In 1991, I was doing a fund-raiser raffle booth. There were several donations, and one of them was a mountain bike that I did not pay too much attention to. When the drawing was held, I pulled the name of my 3-year-old nephew (I swear it wasn't on purpose). Well, he won the bike, which his mother immediately claimed was hers. She rode it a few times, lost interest and it became garage decoration. Since I'm a newbie and needed a ride partner, I asked her if she would be willing to part with the bike so those who don't have one could accompany me. She wanted me to pay a good price or at least half of what it's worth since it was still new (she said it was worth a few hundred back in '91). I'm learning quite a bit from you but still don't know enough.

-91 Fila Metro
-Shimano 200GS front der.

That's all the information she can give me. Has anybody heard of this? What is a fair price? Should I even buy it? My sister-in-law always likes to make the extra $$$ if she can, but I don't want to get ripped off. By the way, this is the same sister-in-law who turned down my offer to give her kid a free car because "it's a piece of crap" but when somebody offered to buy it for $2000, she wanted it then.

200gs is/was second from the bottom of the Shimano line up. The bike was a $200 bike in '91 and is worth maybe $50 today(Tell your sis in law you got an appraisal of value from a liscenced pro ) Unless you really like your brother I would suggest minimal contact with theis person. While her type of malady does not tpically rub off on others, it has been known to make those in contact cynical.

I'd get on ebay and look for an older (circa mid-90's) Rockhopper or something before dealing with that kind of 'tude.

It's a '91 that's been garaged for over 10 years.
It's pretty much a no name bike really (not Giant, Cannondale, etc.).
It has old tech parts.
Needs to go to the LBS for an overhaul (regreased, realignment, retrued wheels etc.) that will cost over a $100.
The going price for the bike NOW is like $20 (you can check this by taking it to a pawn shop and seeing how much you can get for it, or even see what an LBS will give in trade, make sure to take your B!OTCH sister along so she hears the bad news)
And lastly she won it for the price of a raffle ticket that was in her sons name.

If you really want it, offer to deposit the amount she thinks is fair into her sons collage fund. I doubt she will be happy with that because she sounds like a real money grubbing ........

Tell her if she pays YOU 20 bucks, you'll take it off her hands.

You guys are alright. You know, it's not that I really NEED another bike, I just remembered that she had it and thought it would be nice for me to share it with others. So I'm not really in the market for one, but thanks for the offer, forum*rider. Rev.Chuck you are so knowledgeable and I thank you for at least hearing about it and yes, I will tell her that I got an appraisal from an expert. What Kokoro said made a lot of sense...to get that bike going again will cost me more than the bike. Maybe I should do what Koffee Brown said and have her pay me to take the bike but I think that telling her I found one for "only" $650 would do her justice...hehhehheh...

No, I can't be that mean. I'll just tell her some people who know their bikes gave me good advise. OOOhhhh! I am SOOOOOOO tempted to do the $650 thing.....hehhehhehheh

Thanks for all your knowledge and support everyone!

Geez, now I'm really convinced that your sister needs an attitude adjustment Trying to gyp out family by trying to charge half what she estimates to be the price new on a bike older then 10 years that has sat ignored in a garage for pretty much that long (obviously she didn't like it and perhaps even misused it ). And she didn't even by the ticket to to begin with (probably couldn't pry the $2 from her fingers ).

Personally, if it was me, I would have just given you the bike.

What the hell. This happened in 1991 and you're posting about this... 14 years later?

No, No ! My nephew won the bike in 1991 but I just asked her about the bike yesterday and was wondering how much I should pay for it. She wanted me to pay half of what the bike was worth in 1991 when it could have been bought new. I just wanted to get a decent used bike so others can use it and maybe have the fun I do when I ride. (It's not that I'm making a 14 year old complaint, please don't mistake me.).

It was a department store bike, worth nothing now.

Let's see. It cost her $2.00 in 1991. Give her half of the value. $1.
