Bicycle trainer that mimicks terrain changes?

Years ago I read that some bicycle trainers had programs that increases or decreased the resistance of the trainer automatically whilst one rode the trainer whilst watching a Video tape or DVD. The tape or DVD was somehow coupled to the trainer so that as the video showed the start of a hill the resistance on the trainer got greater too.

Can someone tell me the name(s) of such a trianer if they actually exist now?

My BinL would like to get one so he doesn't get too bored too soon riding his indoor trainer for health reasons.

There were also videos or DVDs of rides through some areas such as Grand Teuton and Yellostone. Do these still exsist even if they're not connected to a trainer?

Thanks and cheers

I think the Cycleops Power Beam Pro and Powersync trainers hook up to their Virtual training app. At least one of these has the facility to have the resistance change as the course changes (and the course is displayed graphically on the computer screen). You can even race with others, virtually. Or do the Alpe de Huez climb if you want. At least that's what it looks like to me. I don't own one, though, so I'd value someone who has one chiming in. Is this setup useful?

I was at a bike expo Saturday and got a chance to ride the "pro" linked to a training video and you are correct that it changes the resistance with the terrain. As you speed up the scene moves faster and you can catch and pass other riders. It was awesome and so was the price, about $1,299

I Googled "virtual exercise bike" and saw a lot of interesting possibilities. A recumbent model would be comfortable too.

He wants zwift. It's exactly what he says. They have a list of supported devices (trainers) on their page.

I haven't seen anything that tilts the bike for uphill and downhill. That along with resistance adjusting would make for a great trainer.

That Tour D France one as seen on TV? Local Parks and Rec bought several for spin classes a few years ago ..

has a tilt of the hill is a feature, as seen .. (not tried, I ride outside)

Hi again.

I've been thinking more on this and trying to jog my memory. it came to me just a few minutes ago that the system I'm thinking of was called INTERACTIVE TRAINING. It isn't VIRTUAL REALITY wherein you appear on the computer screen too.

As I recall, you got a video or a DVD, hooked the computer to the trainer and then played the video as you rode the trainer. the video somehow mimicked the resistance that the ride on the screen had. this would have been back in the 1980s or early 1990s era.

Does this help any?

Thanks again and cheers

automatically changing resistance is what a lot of the high-end trainers do. see the KICKR. There are several "ride to real terrain" apps and videos, one example is Kinomap.

But "tape"? You'll probably need to work pretty hard to get a VCR connected to a bluetooth/ANT trainer. Make sure to wear those 80s leg warmers.
