Why don't people list their bike/bikes in their sig or profile?
It really surprises me that so many posters here on BF don't let others know what bike/bikes they own.
I guess if one has more than three or four it can be a pain butI see a lot of posts where people are talking about, or asking questions that would be greatly enhanced if one knew the year/make/model of the bike they were discussing. I don't get it. This is a bike forum. Why would you not share that information? Maybe I'm missing something, if so please enlighten. |
I agree, plus location would be nice too. I often see post about someone riding but have no idea where they are from and likely riding.

The content of a user's post is not dependent on information in their profile. If this information is relevant to the discussion topic, can't a user just mention their bike in the post?
Why don't you include your location in your profile? |

Also, many bikes are not stock, or frame builds. Listing eight bikes that were built up from frame is a chore It doesn't add much of value to the community IMO |

It can add perspective to a persons questions, or comments, but its their choice.

Not part of the Facebook generation, feel no need to share my life with the world - or brag about my possessions. And maybe a bit embarrassed. :)

avidone, I see that you have your location in your sig, so sorry about the catty comment about your location.

Maybe they ride a Huffy?

[SUP][/SUP]Who cares? If my location, or my special knowledge of a specific model of bike, is relevant to what I'm posting, I'll include it. Otherwise, it's irrelevant.
Still, I guess a man who shares a detailed description of his genitals with the interwebz is going to be surprised that others are less, er, forthcoming. |

After seeing this post.... I decided to share.
My herd is too humble to look like I am bragging. And the number (although maybe not complete) is too small to make me look like a hoarder. These are my keepers and they do reflect my riding style. I am an old road bike fanboy... owning my 1st Schwinn Varsity in 1964. The entry level bikes seem less aggressive and better replicate the feel I remember. |
Location is the only one that I feel is of any import. I've seen atrocious grammar or spelling explained by the fact that the poster is not an English speaker, and it's a whole lot easier to recommend a ride to someone or a store to check out if they're in your same locality. What bike they ride is often held in the context of the post. Location is often a wild guess.
|
Both location and bike(s) can give context to a poster's opinion.
If I write that I bike EVERY day, it doesn't carry the same gravity as a guy from Ann Arbor, Michigan writing the same thing. Same if I start pontificating in the minutiae of brifters... Nobody requires this information, but in most special subject forums, listing your gear is good form. In a photography forum that I belong, your gear gets a special page in your profile. |
To me it seems in poor taste to brag about the stuff one has accumulated. Also, as stated above, if one builds from a frame it's silly to list all the components. However, it is amusing to see some of the signatures where folks list all kinds of stuff. I've seen mention of saddles, handlebars, pedals, plus even non bike stuff.

Folks, please put your locations in your profiles. It's easy, fun, and profitable. OK, I lie; there's no profit in it….

+10, especially when your post is about the area in which you ride. For example, from this Road Cycling thread, "Who do you wave to when you ride?"

Please include your street address as well.
List all bikes. What time of day you work. What size your balls are. When will there be nobody home. |
I thought the signature was where we are supposed to put our viewpoints on time and date formats.
|
It's popular to sneak in P&R proselytizing in the signature, no room for bikes.
