help building a bike

Hi everyone,

So here is my story, I hate driving and always find that I grab my bike handle more than the key for the truck. My current bike is a diamondback insight 2 which has been a great bike I am just looking for something new, or turning it into something new. What I use my bike for is a bit of everything from fly fishing trips to getting the groceries. However most of my ridding today consists of going to the bar, getting groceries and putting them in my saddle bags, or heading over to friend's houses. I would like to either upgrade the current bike it self to be better suited for the environment (since the roads here are icey more months than not) and tackle my chores chores easier; or look at getting a new bike. if it matters I have a budget of 500-1000 dollars. I would prefer to stay on the lower end. Any suggestions on what to upgrade, or what bike to get?

You might want to repost this in Bike Mechanics.

Also, take a look at this thread in C&V for ideas: http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...nversions.html
