i was shopping around looking at all the weird rubber band kinds, and then i was like hey! this seems like a better idea.

the rubber piece in between the case and the stem is from an old cycle computer, but there are probably a lot of things that could be used. currently, it can be attached to the stem or the bars, since the holes are in a square pattern. granted zip ties are not ideal... i'm considering cutting the holes into 2 parallel slots in order to use a single wide strap of some kind.

i've taken it out on some long bumpy rides with zero problems. i was worried because the zip ties DO push up on the phone and the sides of the case don't quite cover it, but the top and bottom are good enough.

the case is a "griffin reveal" case. note that its a case made of hard plastic for the back and silicone for the sides. i'm not sure how this would work for a softer case, but i think you could get it to work OK.

Thanks for the inspired design! I have an old HTC EVO 3d that might serve as a cycle computer with ideas above it's station. Recycling the old case looks like a sturdier mount than some of the commercial marvels of engineering that I have seen.

Good job. I think I have an old cyclemeter attachment with no cyclemeter. I think I'll try your idea. Not sure I have an old case though.
If you decide to go with two horizontal slots, Maybe a velcro watch strap.

A different concept I came up with, because it's easy to take on and off

A piece of plastic molding, softened with a heat gun and mashed around the handlebar and phone with my hands.

It's an interesting solution.... Still, I prefer to carry my phone turned off and in a seat bag.

Neat, I love seeing homemade stuff. I put my phone in the seatbag/backpack, but I did make an Ipod holder out of wood & a reflector mount. I've only used it like once so far, though.
