Nonsense. It's only illegal if you sell it claiming it to be that brand name when it's actually not, or sell the actual logo (stickers) and make money. Printing a logo for your own use on your own property is not regulated in any way.

This. I have bought reproduction decals for my Falcon and my Raleigh Competition from apparently legitimate companies which sell their wares on their websites.

When you're done with your tour, I doubt if it would be a back breaking deal to strip off the ugly paint and restore the unfinished Ti. If it were finished Ti, it would be a different story, since you'd then have to restore the original finish.

You could do an electrical tape job on it. Just plan on using some solvent when it is time to come off.

When I started back cycling, I had a $100 Ozone bike from Academy. After a year of use, it was pretty well shot, and I wouldn't have given $5 for it. That's when it was stolen. I don't know that it matters, it'll just get stolen by a lower class of hobo instead of professional bike thieves. Nothing says "cheap crap" like using a bike that IS "cheap crap". Most people that ride bikes any will spot the difference. I don't know to what extent American brands are prevalent in South America, by the way- I know they DO have some of their own cheap Chinese crap down there. Which I've discovered perusing Mercurio and other cargo tricycles.

i don't believe it is if it's not for sale? Printing a set for yourself isn't the same as profiting off copyrighted material.

Keep in mind most bike thieves aren't likely to be hip on the latest bicycle brands.
All that want is to flip SOMETHING real quick to get ahold of some crack or whatever.

I'll add another vote for "huffy" with that in mind as the name seems to be widely known as being synonymous with "wal mart"

Volkswagen. I once put a Volkswagen label on as a head-badge; my bike broke down within an hour.

The only bike I have ever had stolen was a cheap department store mountain bike - I don't remember the name but along the lines of Huffy. On top of that it was in a locked vehicle and cost me a window that was more expensive than the bike was. Sometimes you just never know.

I'm loving these ideas. Especially la Policia, no va and Bikey McBikeface. It seems like Huffy is the runaway leader, but I'm not so sure how well known Huffy is in the Southern Hemisphere. VinnyVincent may be on to something with WalMart.

As for the idea that I'm wasting my time... well, of course I am. But I'm still enjoying this silly exercise.

And for the copyright infringement predictament... a) I doubt it's illegal and b) I really don't expect the copyright cops to be out in force in the Andes.

Keep the ideas coming. I'll make a decision by the weekend.

I think that an opportunist would be as likely to steal a bike for personal use or family or friend's personal use or even to sell for next to nothing even if a more high end thief isn't going to steal it to sell for a good price so I think making sure you can secure the bike well and/or remove an essential part (that's not even a huge discouragement if parts are available) if you have to step away/leave in plain sight. Huffy might not be something a serious cyclist would want but somebody's 8-12 year old daughter might dig it or anybody that just wants/needs some wheels. MierdaMobile may just possibly might do it then again somebody might think that's a cool name too...
