hi. i'm new to the forum. i have this really old bike that was saved from a dumpster doom, and i fixed it all up with a little help and got it working, but i am completely clueless about how to maintain it. i am hoping i might be able to find some information about it online, but i don't know the year it was made or anything. all i know about the model is that it says "va lite" on the chainstay on one side, but i'm not even sure that is the model. is there a site that anyone knows of where i could type in the bike's ID number (the one that's on the bottom of the bottom bracket) and find out something? or are there any bike fanatics out there who would know what i was talking about if i posted a picture? i doubt it's a classic or anything like that. just an old racing/road bike. i'm thinking circa '75/'80. maybe a touch later? (i'm not sure when they started putting vin numbers on bikes.) i can post a picture if anyone wants, but i don't have one right now.
thanks for the help! :)
p.s. incase anyone does know, it's got bio-pace cranks, a chrome fork, dia-compe short-reach brakes, alloy rims (i think?) and downtube, non-indexed shifters. it also has tension-adjuster screws on the dropouts -- if any of those things are helpful in identifying it.

I saw in your introduction
that the bicycle you are talking about is a Fuji. I am in a similar situation. I recently came into the possession of a 22-year-old Fuji. I also am, as yet, unable to determine the model of this bicycle. I am reasonably certain that none of the equipment beyond the frame is original equipment. SunTour Ultra 6 freewheel, SunTour derailleurs, aluminum rims. It's a little rusty and will require some cosmetic tender loving care, but all in all it is quite nice. Very light & nimble, and I actually got it on the road yesterday. I had to replace the chain, which means I am going to have to replace the cog stack, but that is more of an opportunity than a problem. The rear fork is wide enough to accept the Shimano Hyperglide 7-speed stack, and I;m working out the details right now. Good luck with your Fuji project.
