Ugly abandoned bike thread.

This ugly bike was long abandoned next to Original Mel's in
Roseville.
Note it has a Deore LX rear derailleur and some once nice cranks.
Dose anyone recognize the head badge in pic #2 .
I can see it's is a Mongoose.

Are you asking permission to steal it. You have my blessing. Im a firm believer in bicycle liberation. A clearly abandoned bike shoulndnt have to rust away into obscurity when it can live again in the hands of a caring enthusiast.

No, I want nothing more than to share pictures of abandoned bikes, This one is fun because the thin cable and cheap pad lock are still in place.
I am sure if some one wanted it the manager would be happy to to let some one remove it as it has been there for a very long time.
I have no idea the protocol, but I don't think the police would even bother to pick it up so it would most likely become the responsibility of the manager.
Some one please correct me if I'm wrong?

I am in an area where I see abandoned bikes a lot and thought a thread dedicated to these once loved and long forgotten treasures would be fun.

How long must a bike sit in a rack before it's considered abandoned? I have occasion to work on a few college campuses in central IN and see dozens of bikes that apparently are being stored/neglected for months on end. If I had a camera I could take lots of pics.

If it's been left for a week, chances are it has been ditched there or abandoned after a month or two it's a sure bet no one is coming back for it.

In April, I will most likely be in a position to inquire with campus police their policy of abandoned bikes and the possibility of getting some of them to the COOP for refurbishment. However that would involve the cutting of lots of locks--. Not something I would like to be photographed doing

1st get permission from both the collage and the police.
Then get an orange vest and an angle grinder and no one will even give you a second look.

Here in Chicago there are abandoned bikes all over the place. Here the streets and sanitation department takes care of them. They will put a note on the bike and in 30 days they will remove the bike. I do not know what they do with them after they are removed.

I have called in more bikes than I can remember over the years.

There is one in Chicago at my sisters condo building. It has been sitting out there so long that dripping water has ripped the saddle apart. It has been there that long. I think the chain lockng it up only goes through one of the spokes on the front wheel. If it is still there when I go again, which I am sure it will be I will get a picture.

There are a couple at work, unfortunately I can't take pictures there. One is a trike donated by some local store years ago at Christmas - getting rid of inventory. Not a terrible one, much like a decent beach cruiser. It was brand new, and sat inside for a while locked to a pole until they needed to move it to remodel. It has since sat outside for a few years, locked at a bike rack that has been unused because the company has been closing and knocking down old buildings and no one is far enough apart to ride around any more. For a while it had a tarp, but the tarp made a pool in the basket when it rained, and someone got rid of it.

I would like to see one with stalactites of rust hanging from the chain.

If I had a camera at the shop at different points I could show you bikes that you would think belong in this thread but are actually bikes that people ride. Some guy today came into the shop and I thought "awesome he is going to get his bike fixed up and get that old rusted chain and cassette gone" and all he wanted was to use a pump and continue wearing out his drivetrain. Or the people with tape wrapped around cracked aluminum frames with no brake pads left and a well worn out chain and freewheel or cassette which I don't see often but do see on occasion and if there wasn't a live human standing with the bike you would think it was abandoned.

Alas I don't have a camera or time or ability to take the photos of these bikes but sometimes people really amaze me with the bikes they bring in. If they were children those children would have been dead years ago or in the hands of CPS.

There used to be a frame near one of the bus stops I used that over time was completely stripped of everything but cranks and pedals it just got sadder and sadder as the months went on.

How sad looks like a Schwinn Trail way.
They should go to a bike kitchen if not calmed in 30 days.
