there's plenty of decent quality, sub-$400 used bikes around...add the tools, pump, helmet, shoes, etc etc and you can easily be in the sport for well under $750.
that's not exactly a bank-breaker for most people that want to have a hobby.
if you want a cheap sport, be a runner.

I’m getting old and forgetful; people should simply be glad that I still remember to put some manner of pants on before I go out riding.

That's too funny, because I came to the same basic conclusion and wear gray or black fatigue pants and a gray sweatshirt or t-shirt pretty much all the time. It is my "work uniform," my shopping outfit, my travel attire ... I never need to worry about what to wear or what clothes to buy or pack.
That daily showering though ... that is an intriguing idea.

I read somewhere that Anarchists at the Spanish Civil War wore always blue mechanics overalls and considered other clothing as bourgeois.

I chose item #2 , "Just haven't had it explained properly."
I was once asked about my fashion philosophy, and my reply was "utilitarian, but appropriate"...works well for me, and makes getting dressed a challenge.
