Do you secure your front tire when on a car trunk rack?

I have a nice Yakima two bike trunk rack, with nice straps and cradles for the top and seat tubes. But it also came with a strap for securing your front wheel to the frame of your bike so it doesn't twist and flop around while you're driving. I do it every time.

Yet, I see pretty much 75% of everyone else fly around with the front wheel unsecured. It twists and bangs against the bumper or rack or even the bike frame when they brake, accelerate, hit a pothole, or catch a strong wind.

Thoughts? Doesn't this have potential to damage your wheel?

No danger of damage to the wheel from flopping. Usually air flow pusher it to one side or the other and holds it there so it doesn't flop as you drive anyway.

BTW - probably the most common cause to wheels when bikes are carried behind the car is heat related. The hot exhaust flowing over the the rim or tire can cook them pretty badly, even to the extent that the tire catches fire. It's to your advantage to leave the wheel loose to windmill as you drive keeping the hot exhaust from damaging the tire.

When I used to carry my bike behind my car, I always felt better when I'd look in my mirror and see the wheels spinning.

When I used to use a rack, yes I did. I now have a car that has enough cargo space in back when I lay the back seats down I can carry my bike inside the vehicle. However, If I ever have to transport two or three bikes, then I'd have to go back to the rack.

That's interesting. Thankfully I never had that problem, but it will definitely be something to keep in mind if/when I have to use a trunk rack again.

Honestly, all depends on many factors. I mean when you secure the bike, what are the chances that damage could occur to either the bike or the car if that wheel flops (different cars, different bikes are all going to be different). On my old car and with my mtb -- the front tire would get right up on the bumper where it would rub it while spinning, but would never touch it hard enough to stop it from spinning.

For me, I always secured the front tire. That takes like 10 seconds in a 5 minute process and ensures a little peace of mind. I also used to double check the mounts, sometimes triple check...so I tend to err on the side of caution most of the time.

Are you worried about scratching up you car?

That is the main reason to secure wheels on a trunk rack

I saw a very expensive track disk wheel fried by the exhaust years ago. But I don't see that as a whether to secure or not issue. Where the exhaust is going to be is known. See to it that the racked bike isn't in line with it. (A good thing to consider before selecting the rack.) To me, securing the front wheel is simply good seamanship. I have never liked the idea of sitting my bike where it will be crunched in routine fender benders so I will probably never own one but that's another issue.

I used to have a trailer hitch rack on my mustang, and then a Thule trunk mount on my Subaru. I always used a bungee cord to secure the front and back wheels, and the crank, to keep them from flopping against the car. Never had a problem with hot exhaust, but then every car is different. I now have an SUV where I can easily fit one bike on its side, and two if I remove the front wheels. BTW, with the front wheel removed, each of my bikes fit in the back seat of the Subaru (one at a time). But soon after the new bike last year I got a new car.

Front wheel secured and is away from the exhaust. Have a truck so the exhaust is very much lower than the wheels.

Dude - just bungee cord the wheels to the pedals. That's it that's all - done deal!

Yeah I said in my original post that I always use the strap and secure the front wheel around the down tube and the rack.

I was just wondering about other folks.

I've never had an exhaust issue to the best of my knowledge.

I use a bungee, just remember to take it off before you start to ride. Speaking from experience.

First time I put my wife's bike on the rack with mine, the spokes of the front wheel of her bike scratched the fork of my (then) brand new bike.

I use a bungee to secure the wheel aligned with the frame now and have no problem.
