2009 Trek Madone 4.7: good deal?
 

Hello everyone,

My local bike shop has a used 2009 Trek Madone 4.7 in my size for sale. They're asking $750 for it.

The bike is well used, and has some scuffs here and there, but overall in fine condition.

Full ultegra groupset, bontrager carbon seattube, bontrager race stem, velocity spartacus wheels. Seems pretty much the standard setup for a madone 4.7.

I regularly see bikes like this listed on Ebay and Craigslist for upwards of $1200. So is this a great deal? I was looking to upgrade from my 2001 trek 5200 USPS with Campagnolo Chorus groupset, and I'm tempted to buy this one because of the price?

Is this even a worthy upgrade over my 2001 trek?

Honestly, if it fits you, it sounds like a decent deal to me. Especially if you're good with working on them yourself and can spot any issues.

Thanks for the advice. I know those prices listed on bicyxlebluebook, but they always sound too good to be true. I rarely find a bike used at those prices. So are most people on Ebay and Craigslist just asking prices that are WAAAY too high??

Looks like a pretty solid deal to me. The used market varies a lot depending where you live. Whether or not it's a worthy upgrade is subjective, but I know I wouldn't be caught riding a Trek USPS frame. ;)

Hehe, well I like the USPS bike a lot, I like the colors :) I like thinking that "if it was good enough for Lance Armstrong, it's goo enough for me". :thumb:

About the upgrade: actually it is a bit complicated. I'm from Belgium, living in the US at the moment. I am considering either shipping my 2001 Trek 5200 USPS over from Belgium to the US (which will cost me about $260). I paid about $600 for the USPS 5200 a few years ago, so it seems silly to spend $600 + $260 to ship it here, when I can sell the 5200 back home and buy a "better" bike here for $750.

This is the USPS bike I have: 2001 Trek 5200 - New and Used Bike Value (but with different wheels (Rigida) and Campagnolo Chorus groupset).


I don't know much about bikes, but how much did the bike technology improve from 2001 to 2009? Would I notice a significant improvement in ride quality? I think both bikes were about the same price when they were new. I think Campagnolo Chorus is about equivalent to Shimano Ultegra groupset?

Would it be a good upgrade you think? Thanks!

What if you don't like the newer Madone ? I have paid $200 dollars for a seat that I hated. I don't think $260 to keep a bike I know I love is unreasonable.

I think it's pretty safe to say that frame wise, the Madone is an upgrade. 8 years is a long time in the bike world, especially around carbon layup and fiber strands. But whether or not you'll be any more comfortable or faster is a different question.

To me it's a no brainer. If you just take into account the shipping cost, you'd be able to sell back the Madone easily for the difference in shipping (750 - 260 = $490 to just break even with shipping). I would venture a guess even if you sold it a year or two from now, you'd lose very little money, maybe none at all. Certainly less than $260.

Also, why don't you just test ride it? Since it's in a shop, I assume they'd have no problem letting you test ride it. You'll know right away if the bike is right for you.
