Extra tire storage?
 

Hi all,
I've managed to amass quite a few extra tires, as I tend to buy tires when I see them on sale or whatever. Typically in Bike shops they are hung up. Does anyone have any clever storage ideas for extra tires? Currently mine are stacked up laying down on a shelf but I don't want to make brand new tires unusable due to improper storage.

I don't think you need to worry too much about that. The only issues I know of with tire storage are due to thermal issues and ozone, but I think that's mostly for natural rubber.

Cool, dry, out of the sunlight, away from ozone, etc. If you've got a temperature-controlled argon chamber, that would be the best place, obviously. ;)

They are hung up in shops for product visibility, ease of access and space considerations.

There's not much you can do wrong with tire storage except as regards the environment, ie, heat, UV exposure, Ozone, etc.
Hanging is a good way to keep them out of the way, and if you want to get fancy, garden hose racks are a good solution. Overkill, but why not.

I screw huge squared off hooks into my garage wall and hang tires there. I can fit 7-8 tires from a hook.

These aren't folding tires we're talking about I'm guessing?

No, wire bead. They are definitely out of sunlight. I guess the way I've got them is good.

For a how long are you going to store that tires ?

I zip tied an old baseball bat to the back of my garage door rails (the part that's behind the garage door when it's open). Then I hung my ever increasing tire collection off of that. The garage door never comes back that far so it's a great use of space.

I wouldn't attempt to hand off of the bat (it's only up there with 4 big zip ties or so), but it holds tires just fine.

+1 on FB's garden hose hanger idea. I hang my bikes on hooks and have three plastic garden hose hangers in between the hanging bikes. If you space them so that edges of the stored tires hang at a level where the edges end up between the wheels of the hanging bikes, you get a great use of storage space. As a bonus, the hose hangers I used have a storage space in the middle intended for hose nozzles, etc. They work great for storage of boxed inner tubes and rim tape. I have a hanger for my road tires, my touring tires, and my 26" tires.

Sunlight is only part of the equation. Ozone, which we humans make in huge quantities by various means, is just as important to protect against. The ozone is harder on the tires than sunlight is. Luckily, polyethylene plastic is a good barrier to ozone. Put the tires in a garbage bag and simply seal it. Keep the polyethylene out of the sun and the tires should be good for a long time. Just protect the bag from rips and tears.

I toss mine in a plastic garbage bag in a closet. Probably not necessary but it protects them from UV and ozone.

On Tour I brought a 3rd tire , draped over my rear Panniers
since it was a HD tire that was not subject to the folding possibilities .

I hang em high. And out of the way. Except for the one around my waist.

Garage ceiling with big screw hooks, 5 ft broom handle between them, lots of tires can fit there.

In zip lock baggie, tightly sealed, and then placed in freezer.
