new rider needs help with bike shorts !!
Hey guys am new here and am a total beginner
I was planning to start daily cycling for 30 mins just to get in shape and because i love it cycling.
but two days ago after hitting the gym (Indoor bike) and cycling for 20 mins i had this pain and discomfort in my butt area and then after some research i thought maybe i should get some cycling shorts however, since am totally new what kind of cycling shorts do you recommend for me?
and in case i get one can i wear something on top of them like those MTB shorts (cycling shorts look a bit funny and am pretty sure people would be staring at me)

I use pearl izumi bibs, the 80 dollar model (those are the inexpensive ones believe it or not). You can always wear thin shorts over them, but every additional layer decreases the comfort IME.

Edit: Just wore the Craft shorts on a club ride this morning. The Craft shorts are very comfortable as well.

People don't wear bike shorts for fashion. They do it because they help. I wear gym shorts over my Lycra because I can't be without pockets to put my hands in when I stop. I don't feel like the extra layer hurts, but I have a pair of Canari brand shorts that don't hold the pad tightly to me and that's uncomfortable.

If you're concerned about modesty, you can get mountain bike shorts that have liners in them. They look more like 'normal' shorts, and besides, you're riding indoors where aerodynamics don't matter. BTW, when you wear shorts with a pad, the pad is the underwear. Especially, don't wear COTTON underwear with padded shorts - that's a recipe for not only chafing but a fungal infection.

I have a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts that resemble boardshorts, in side is a liner with a chamois. Really comfortable and discreet. I don't wear them much because I find bibs more comfortable. I swore I would never wear bibs but after buying a kit with them, I am sold. As far as people looking at you, who cares. The benefits far out way the negatives here. Go try some out and you will see, it's nothing worth all this fuss. If cost is an issue look at places like Nashbar and Bike Tires Direct.

If you have a Sports Authority around you, go check them out right now. Since they are going out of business, you can get items 10-30% off, even more in some stores. I recently bought their Trayl branded mountain bike shorts and actually liked them very much. Did an 18 mile ride yesterday (1hr 40min+ in saddle, pulling kiddy trailer) and was pleasantly surprised by them. No sore nether regions. They looked like normal workout shorts with a padded lining. I'm actually thinking about heading back and buying anther pair. But be warned... all sales final, so try them on in the store before you buy.

After using Pearl Izumi's for years (and they're excellent) I found Aerotech men's pro bike shorts. At $40, they're less than half the price. They're lasting well and are very comfortable. As to modesty, just wear a light pair of gym shorts over them, as mentioned.

I've been wanting to try Performance Elite or Ultra bib shorts for a while now. Just saw the 2016 Elite bib for $60:

The Ultra are out of stock, unfortunately.

Just as an alternative to what has been suggested thus far; You could get the liner-shorts and wear whatever pant/shorts you're comfortable with.
