N+1 Disease
I've had my Trek FX 7.4 for a little more than a year now and I love it. I traded in my old Wal mart mountain bike for this hybrid.
The hybrid is great for street riding. But there are two things it doesn't do as well.
First, I've been taking the family on trails north of my house, which turn from paved to gravel to dirt. This type of riding is OK on a hybrid, but would be much better on a mountain bike.
Second, I'm traveling out west this summer and will pass through Colorado. I'm bringing my dirt bike with me to ride the Alpine Loop near Silverton, but I was thinking how awesome it would be if I had a proper mountain for this trip.
So anyway, I'm checking out mountain bikes now. The N+1 disease is real!

It really is a disease.....but you have to keep feeding the beast, LOL! Nothing wrong with having a proper MTB and a road/hybrid type of bike. For many of us, we have multiple bikes of each kind :-).

I'll let you in on a secret: a hybrid bike is a mountain bike!
(At least an old-school one, before suspension became popular.) Just swap out the smooth tires for some knobby ones (either 700c cyclocross or 29er MTB, depending on what fits through your fork and stays) and call it good.

There is nothing wrong with having the right tool for the right job. Nor is doing something you deem fun, positive and motivating. The decision is yours as to what you see a "worthy investment", or a "waste of money". (BTW- you STILL need a road bike
