Tell me about Carrera Phantom (identify this bike)

I got this frame years ago and I'm finally thinking about doing something with it, but mainly I'm just curious.

Googling Carrera bicycles turns up Italian bike maker that was founded in the late 80s, but this frame looks lower-end than what they make. There's also a brand called Carrera that's carried by the British chain Halfords. I don't think it's the same as the Italian brand. Neither site has any mention of a "Phantom" model.

Does anyone know anything about this bike or where it came from?

I took a few pictures, but I don't see how to post them from my phone. I'll try to remember to post them from my computer tonight.

Bike Brand companies try to hit a wide range of customers Budgets , with a series of cost compromises when the money spent is reduced, so as to Be affordable.

such as the tubing in the frame, and all the parts installed. yours is a Pragmatic not a Pro Frame.

If You Read the labels in several of the pictures , you would not have even asked that question..

Do you mean the Puch tubing label? I don't know if that means Carrera was a Puch brand or if they were an independent company that bought raw tubing from Puch and assembled it to their own design.

Might not be a Carrera, someone could have added those decals later.

Here's a link to a Puch Brigadier I found searching Puch 482 tubing. The lugs are pretty much identical to your ones I think.

Of course, it could be one of those Halfords Carreras which could be a rebranded Puch for all I know.

More googling indicates the Brigadier is from 78 or 79 which predates the Carrera-Podium brand which was started in 89 by some folks associated with the Carrera professional cycling team (Carrera being a jeans maker themselves, for fun google the Carrera team kit, cycling knicks with a jeans print anyone?).

Thanks! My curiousity is still unsatisfied, but you found more than I did.
