I dont think anyone would seriously buy a Walmart bike and expect to do any serious off-road riding on it, much less what the tester in the article did. I'm sure most of the legions of Walmart bikes sold never make it off the pavement.

You'd be surprised what kids do with bikes.

This proves my point i tried to make in another post. BBS bikes should be made simple. No suspension of any kind, side pull brakes, and friction shifters.
The rider burnt the brake pads, bent the handlebars, and the forks started leaking oil. An older rigid frame Huffy would've held up better on that trail...

Totally agree but Walmart's offerings bikes arent made like they're made because the company thinks they're a good idea for the rider. They know those features are what clueless and broke riders will be looking for.

The bike did pretty good considering he never took the time to make sure everything was set up and tightened properly. He could have ridden a low price Trek and got the same result I suspect.

But he did take time to tighten things up. Not sure if you watched his video.

For serious mountain biking, a Walmart bike is not the answer. But for most folks, who ride dirt trails at best, a bike like this is perfect. And at $179, it's relatively disposable.

My grandpa had a cheapie Murray/Huffy/whatever hardtail he used for going out to check the pumps in the fields for the better part of 20 years. I guarantee that thing never once saw a tune up or a lube.

He just replaced it with a $99 K-Mart beach cruiser, and suits his needs fine.

you all know, that if you have to depend on a tool (a bicycle) you over buy quality for your intended use. If you plan on driving 200 mph, you better be purchasing a race car. Aside from snob-ism, find out what is available, determine your use factor and buy within your budget. Do not downgrade Ford Pintos because for many people they were cheap transportation.

Thanks for your post. I watched the video and stand corrected. A couple of things caught my eye. First he had no complaints about the frame or the wheels. I suspect if you put good front shocks with 8" travel, and a new stem and handle bars on it, along with a brake pad upgrade you would have a pretty good down hill bike for around $500. That's for about the price of the front wheel and tire he has on his regular bike.

It's mysterious that the fork is leaking oil. I didn't think there was any in there to begin with.

So was the Yugo, and everyone know what a huge POS they were.

And while I think disc brakes are ridiculous on road bikes, they would have been very welcome on this bike.
But, I'm sure disc brakes would jack the price to over $200.

I'm not a fan of Walmart bikes but they state on the frame this is not to be used off-road. We keep seeing people taking their lives making videos and getting the same results. Why doesn't anyone read the instructions on the bike?

Full suspension, knobby 29+ tires, frame styling matching the latest MTB style, names like "Carnage," and a small warning label no one reads because of course warning labels are only for idiots. It's willfully deceitful and deserving of constant exposure and mockery.

When I was a kid, Dad bought our bikes from either sears or western auto. They were bullet proof!!! Never had any issues with them, Remember being super excited when I got my first 26 inch three speed!
