Face/Eye Sweat
As the weather heats up, I am collecting large volumes of sweat in my eyes. I wear prescription glasses/sunglasses, so frequent eye wiping is a bit of a hassle. Then a bunch of salt collects around my eyes and starts getting ouchy.
The pads in my helmet are getting old and not as absorbent, so I ordered a replacement pair. Also ordered one of these: https://www.swimoutlet.com/p/pearl-i...dband-8126121/ Any other tips/tricks/suggestions? |
I use a head band called Halo. It has a rubber strip along the front that moves the sweat to the sides instead of draining into your eyes.
|
+1 on the Halo headband. Best headband I've worn in decades of riding. The little rubber band over the brow-line keeps sweat out of the eyes and works great! A bit expensive for a "band" but I liked it so much I bought a spare. Recommend them highly over the others on the market, which I have tried but don't work nearly as well.

I take a bandana and (if it's warm) i use one that's cut in half like a triangle. By the time I get to the half way point, I can wring it out. It also doubles as emergency first aid equipment.

I just wear a bandana. From the above it sounds like the headband works better.

Monday morning I tried something I had been considering for a while. I stuck a washcloth on my bars between my strobe and reflector. occasionally I would grab it, wipe my forehead and stuff it back on. it worked but was awkward. had to hang my glasses on my shirt while I did it. then I rode without my glasses for a while, nice change of pace but then I don't have that protection. this will be even more awkward next time, cuz I put my mirror on my glasses
normally the back of my glove (fingerless this time of year) is adequate but I haven't been wearing gloves. probably should cuz I have a small sore spot or callus forming on my left palm |
Head sweats or similar under your helmet. Kiss the eye sweat goodbye.
|
Halo headband with the "sweat gutter" - I feel silly wearing it, but the helmet covers it completely and it works terrifically.
|
Bandannas. And I usually stuff an extra in my jersey pocket or pants pocket. Dampen it with water from my bottle to wipe my face once in awhile. I thought about trying a Headsweats but I already have so many bandannas I'll just keep using them.

For increasing heat and humidity, I go with rolled-up bandana sweat band, Halo, and Sweat Gut'r. If I'm on a bike with a rack two Halos are acceptable, wear one and hang the other out to dry on the rack, wring out and swap when necessary. The sweat gutter works well as long as it's positioned precisely.

Ever had your blood sodium level checked?

I always wondered what those funny cycling hats were for.......
|
Ah - another problem that I had forgotten about:
I used to take two bandanas with me on the bike - one worn as a headband and the other drying on the handlebar. I'd switch them whenever I stopped. Since I started riding recumbents it's a non issue because I'm leaning back when I ride. Thanks for the reminder. |
I have a headsweats and they work well, the cycling hats also work well. Never thought I would ever put on a cycling hat...but now I do.
|
I might ride naked , but I won't ride without my Halo.
|
I wear a do rag under the helmet. Keeps the sweat off of my face, prevents the funky sun burn patterns on the scull (I'm bald) and I can squirt some water on it through the helmet during a ride for a quick cool down if needed.

I had that same issue with the pads on my helmet. That is until I bought a Halo II Headband. It works really well. I have taken one or two long rides in the summer where I had to stop and rinse and squeeze out the headband because I sweated it all up. No more stinging salt in the eyes. I couldn't imagine a cotton bandana can hold as much sweat and was willing to spring the $13 to try the Halo and I wear it all year round, winter (haha CA winters) and summer.

+1 for the Halo. Keeps the sweat out of my eyes even in the nastiest weather, and I ride in the 90s and 100+
|
Another vote for the Halo headband. I used to use a generic headband I got from Nashbar, then replaced that with a Headsweat headband.
Bought the Halo this spring and it really works well. |
I sweat like a stuck pig, but the Halo really works. Love that thing.
|
^^^^^^ HALO I live in South Florida & the Halo just works!
|
Cycling cap worn backwards protects my neck and draws the sweat away from my face and towards the back.

Do rag +1 here. 2 days ago I sewed a piece of microfiber car wash towel into the brow of the do rag. it worked great!! The do rag by itself would absorb all it could, but would leave seam marks on my forehead, and finally would drip. Wore the "new and improved" do rag yesterday, worked like a champ! I might give these a try, also. https://www.amazon.com/Wicking-Beani.../dp/B00W8WGKP2 |
