Prescription Glasses.. recs please..
 

Hi all... I have been using Rudy Project Rydons for the last couple of years. I have the photochromic lenses, which are super good, plus I have a rimless insert for my prescription. I know some people don't like the inserts but once on I don't even know its there.

So why am I looking for recommendations. Here's the thing. When I am down in the hooks or just generally caning it I find myself looking over the top of my spex.. This is not ideal.. crap gets in the eyes and hey the world is a bit bleary out there.

I can crank the temple tips round my ears so the glasses are more snug on my face but the I am looking at the brow bar.

Can anyone suggest spex that are a bit bigger on the face, ones that I can get prescription for without having to take out a second mortgage..

I got them with photochromic lenses but they don't seem to get dark enough. They're a fairly large lens and I don't have any issues with peripheral vision or having to view above the frame while in the drops.


Not very stylish, but function trumps form and the price is right.

FYI, you can squeeze the nose piece together so the glasses sit higher up on your face,
which will solve the problem of looking over the rims while in the drops.

From Aliexpress here. There are many sellers that will make you some glasses like the above but I found these frames (with two screws) to be strongest, and the seller reliable. Here is the lens design that I sent to the above seller (please feel free to mention my name, Timothy Takemoto).

Normal lenses in poly carbonate lasted a couple of weeks. The Trivex lenses have lasted three months and they are still fine. The above glasses are about the 9th iteration.

I use Croakies and safety side shields. Less than $10 investment. Works very well and doesn’t interfere with my temple mounted mirror.

Yeah theres something very wrong there..

It's not about finding super cheap.. as I said I use Rydons right now.. its about being able to see.. I find cheap lenses unreliable and they can damage ones eyes if the script is not dead on..

If I wore those upside down they might work.

Have you considered a TT type helmet like the Giro Air Attack?

I was not expecting that from the OP!

I am not interested in super cheap either, but functionality. I think that the lenses are only more 'functional' and 'dead on' than inserts, which would not allow me to get into my drops. I am unaware of the existence of any product that allow me to use my drops other than TT type helmets (@Western Flyer) which I would like to try.

I had similar problems and went to multi-focal contacts and regular biking glasses. (I wore contacts for 30 years, but my near vision got so bad that, rather than carry reading glasses, I went to distance glasses that I take off in order to read/work on a computer, etc.) So now I wear contacts when I ride. Did my neck a world of good. Any reason you can't wear contacts when you ride?

You did say "without having to take out a second mortgage" which implies you don't want to spend a lot of money. Do you have vision insurance? I got my Oakleys Racing Jackets in prescription and covered just the same as any other pair of glasses. But they were still frigging expensive, that is a relative term though.

I recently even added a photochromatic lens, I recall someone on this forum recommended them, and I wanted some anyway for the early morning starts where I don't need shading yet, or say for multi-day treks to not have to bring separate inside and outside glasses. They work well for that but I am not very pleased with the shading... in full sun I am still squinting and have to take them off and look at them to check that they are actually even shaded.

They fit snug almost like goggles, especially with the included strap. However when I ordered lenses a couple months ago they did tell me the frames are no longer made. I'm not sure what they have now.

I've been using goggles I got from my eye doctor for years and I've been very happy with them. They aren't photochromic, but they have quite a dark tint; great during the day, but I can't wear them at night. I don't know exactly which model they are, but they say "Rec Specs Maxx" on them. They don't have the arms that go over your ears; instead they have a strap. They're very secure, comfortable, and I never have to look over the frame.

I do optics design by day, though I've never done any work in vision correction. Still, I've tested the lenses that I've received -- mainly out of curiosity, They've always been accurate, save for one pair that my spouse received, 20 years ago, where the cylinder angle was 90 degrees off in one eye.

As I understand it, there's only one mainstream technology for grinding eyeglass lenses to prescription, and you might actually be better off with a centralized factory that can keep its equipment and operators under tight control. And there is practically only one company that makes frames:

Presently, I get my glasses from Zenni. One benefit is not having to make two trips to a store -- first for choosing the frames, and second for picking up the finished glasses. I also just hate that the person at the store is trained to be a high pressure salesman. I get the feeling when dealing with them, that I don't know what I need, versus what is just an expensive add-on, and that they will lie to me if necessary.

While they are NOT a cycling fashion statement, I bought a pair of perscription glasses at Walmart. They are sun glasses of course, blue block, polaroid, and bifocal, since I am 78. They cost about $100. With them I no longer have to carry a pair of reading glasses in case of a flat, or the need to fix something on the bike.

As I say they are not a fashion statement, but they serve a logical need.

RichSPK's googles look to be non Luxottica. There are quite a lot of prescription goggles from China.

I have some that I used for karate but they would be no good cycling in the drops.

These are below are taller, less than 30 USD, and convert to spectacles too - one can convert the strap to arms and vice-versa. Again, if I wore them upside down they would be okay.
