I guess there were just too many "facetious" comments. What ever that means. The only wall I wanted to build was to keep Donald Trump out all you guys are welcome.

[QUOTE=FBinNY;19073143]Yes, however what we pay you depends on the world price. Oil is fungible, it doesn't matter where a particular barrel comes from. So there's no difference if Canadian oil goes to Japan and Middle East oil to the USA, or the other way around.

Because Cdn. oil is landlocked, the U.S. applies a discount. On a 100U.S. barrel, the discount can be as much as
30$ per barrel. If Canada could get its oil to tidewater it could be sold at world prices.

While I simplified things because it grew out of a facetious comment in the first place, the dynamics of world oil prices are complex. Even though oil is fungible, there's other factors like logistics, and the cost of actually getting it to the market.

As you point out, Canada might get a better price if they could deliver in Asia, but then again the added cost of delivering to Asia might eat up the differential.

However, this thread was about the Trans Canada Trail, and I think we should try to put aside any oil issues and get back to that.

It may not be land locked in the classic sense, however it originates east of the Rockies, and the mountains and existing pipeline network make delivery to the central USA much cheaper than to a Pacific port.

Shipping oil is expensive, and factors into the cost structure significantly.

BUT

Can we get back to the trail, or ask if the mods can lift this part of the discussion and move it elsewhere, so this thread can stay on topic.

Speaking as a Canadian ... I would dearly love for the people in charge of the TransCanada Trail to take it seriously and actually build a TransCanada Trail.

I wish they would look at the Velodyssey route. I wish they'd look at the rail trails in Victoria, Australia. I wish they'd see what a real trail looks like and start building that.

I started this thread in Living Car Free ... maybe the "powers that be" for the TransCanada Trail could browse through some of those options to get some ideas ...

Well. The Quebec portion of the Trail follows a lot of the "Route Verte" which is very cycling friendly. Anyone wishing to ride it only has to be prepared for the hard packed unpaved portions. The few sections that are on roads are not difficult to handle. Keep in mind that Quebec is the largest Canadian province, bigger than most countries

True, but how many cyclists (besides myself) have any interest in riding up to places like Churchill. Quebec is sort of like Russia; huge, but the population and development confined to a comparatively small portion.

Churchill is in Manitoba and it would be quite the challenge cycling there!

No pipe line capacity to tidewater. It must be shipped by land either by pipeline or rail.

Western Canada produces a lot of heavy oil which needs extra refining steps which is why it has a significant discount. Transportation is less of an issue since there was a massive boost in ever so safe rail transport capacity while everyone was distracted over pipelines.
