Need a very strong beam for night training any recommendations

I really like my MagicShine.

It hard to beat this one. Except maybe with this one. Or this one. Word of caution, they don't put out 1200 lumens. They put out about 700 lumens but that's not too bad. The beam pattern on these tend to be fairly narrow compared to other LED bicycle lights. I personally like the very narrow beam but others don't. If the beam is too narrow, you can get diffusers that spread the beam out some.

I would also suggest getting at least 2...one for the bars and one for your head. Three is even better. At less than $20 a light, you can afford to get as many as you like.

Cateye 300, used mine last Saturday night, it lit up the road in front of me extremely well. Cheap, small and rechargeable.

I just got a new light. I'll let you know tomorrow. Literally just put it on my bike.

I'm sold on Cygo, but they cost a bit more than the one's being thrown out.
They main thing is they use 5v USB rechargeable, which means there are all kinds of battery packs to recharge them.

Sometimes it is the same light with a US seller's brand added at double or more of the cost.

Here's an example of one I got for a birthday gift recently. It's a Blitzu Gator 320 (320 lumens, USB rechargeable) which cost her about $30 on Amazon. The exact same light can be purchased on eBay without the Blitzu name for $10.42 postpaid from China. I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was only 1/3 as bright as the single CREE XML-T6 flashlight that I normally use for a bike headlight.

You can find some very nice aluminum housed headlights on eBay with from one to five CREE emitters. CREE lists the output for the XML-T6 as 1000 lumens at 1W. I own both a single and 5 emitter lights. The 5 CREE light is incredibly bright. They run on an 8.4V Li-ion battery pack. The brighter the light, the shorter the run time for the same capacity battery. I really prefer this type of light over the Blitzu light with an internal battery as the battery capacity is much greater for the separate battery model. Check out the cost for just a battery for some of the lights made by Nightrider. The battery alone is twice the cost of the Chinese light.

Back from my morning ride, with report.

Good: Small. Pretty bright for it's size. Everything is self contained. It seems to have more of a spotlight in the middle, that looks to be about 10' wide when positioned about 25' ahead of the bike. Then there is another area of light, less bright, that spreads across the width of the road. More like a flood light.

Bad: Maybe not bad, but I would like it to be brighter.

I don't regret buying it. The tailight is very bright. I would like the headlight to be about twice as bright.

This is really where the issues come into play, for myself. Several of the lights I looked at, needed a battery pack. That's just something else to strap to the bike. You get stuck between more lumens vs. how to get power to those lumens vs. runtime.

I won't buy this one again. I'll keep looking for that Holy Grail of lights. Super small, but bright as daytime, and lasts a long time on a super small rechargeable battery. And of course, not too expensive.

These are so Bright you can run them on Low.

The Strobe is fantastic for Day Safety.

ps - My Cygolite headlight is also my Last flashlight - I use it for everything.

With USB systems, if you need battery packs, look at 10Ah and higher cell phone chargers

+1 for Cygo's. They are bright, light and effective and as Bulldog said, USB so can be recharged any number of ways. I especially like the Dash model as it's small, quick to mount and portable. One thing is for sure about Cygo's, the strobing feature is something that motorists CANNOT ignore. I know, I'm a motorist!

The ones that cyccomute mentioned look very promising and I may order one since it's around $20 bucks.

They came highly recomended from the budget light forum. You can customize it with whatever lamp warmth you want. I had another member help me decide the best warmth for your eyes during night time riding (I forgot what I even bought now lol). I then researched and bought 2 Sanyo cells and a nice charger. It is very nice. I carry spare cells in my bike bag. I use the strobe function even during day rides to allow motorists to see me from a distance. I may buy a second. If the OP isn't into DIY or eBay lights from China then he should look at Light & Motion Urban and Vis series.

I own the Light & Motion Urban 800 fast charge and also use a Light & Motion Vis 360+ on my helmet. They are simple, elegant, work out of the box without zip ties or duct tape and throw plenty of light. I rode 30 miles in the dark last night with this setup.

Planning on many Night Rides

If you are planning on many long night rides, you might consider this battery pack. The 26650 cells double the capacity and run time. They are larger but not horribly so.

hub dynamo setups and LED lights will be reliable and no worries about battery run time coming up short, mid ride.. .

Rather interesting that the Cygolite 320 Dash pictured in Bulgdog's pictures is identical to the $30 Blitzu Gator and the $10.42 model I listed above in my post with the exception of minor differences in the plastic housing. The specs are identical. It has now been replaced by a $40 Dash 350 which has 4 smaller LEDs in addition to the main one.
If you don't like dealing with the external battery pack which is really necessary for very bright lights pulling a couple of watts, go with the single CREE XML-T6 flashlight. The output is 1000 lumens (according to CREE) and you can zoom the light if needed to get different lighting patterns. It runs on a single 18650 Li-ion battery (3.7V, 4200 mAh) that you can switch out in a few seconds and which is small and light enough so that you could carry a spare battery if you were concerned about running out of juice. The flashlight will operate for several hours on high or many more in flashing mode. how long do you plan on riding at night and keeping your light on OP? that will make it much easier to recommend lights with battery packs vs without. if ya don't need a battery pack it's a lighter and easier to mount setup

+1 for cheap Chinese knockoff lights. We just fired ours up last night for the first time this year, excellent. I also ordered some Aootek Superbright 300 Lumen lights to use on our helmets. We'll see if those do the trick too. Ultimately if I crash and break a light I don't want to have to cry over it. And since I ride in the winter a crash can happen.

One of these on the handlebars, and one mounted on the seatstay and you're set.
