Every time I open this forum, I have 3 more quotes to answer from this thread, and majority of them are unintelligible.
You trying to make me the topic of the thread is in fact running it off topic.
I will not be the topic of this thread.

Hi
I have not cycled for 30 years.
Looking at other cyclists dress it's obvious they know something we don't.
To wear such ugly clothes must be important function wise.
I see cycle pants come with a soft clot where ass meets saddle.
But none of this explains why wearing such tight fitting ball pitchers.
And the tight fitting feminine psychedelic shirts? I have nothing against feminine.
So. It boils down to a sore ass needing comfort.
Any other reasonable explanation why I need to dress like so, would be of great value.

Cool man. Cool. Love it. Father and daughter from Texas in the kind of clothes I like. And the kind my wife will like. I asked her what she thought about general cycling clothes. I am glad I did not quote her.
BTW: You are truly a useful guy. I'll be checking out for you.

I wasn't trying to offend you in any way, I was just stating that people were still answering the OP in the greater scheme of things. I apologize if you took offense.

I'm a huge fan of the Fox Ranger shorts for Bikepacking/touring.
Fox Racing Ranger Shorts - Men's | Backcountry.com
They're not too "loud" so you can wear them off the bike and not look like a crazy person.
They do have a padded lining, but it's removable.
They're also quick drying and breath well.
They're also pretty cheap!

Personally, I wear bibs and a jersey to ride my bike, not to shop or get coffee.

And yes, you'll still be considered a freak by the rest of the world who aren't avid cyclists.

Now that we know why cycling clothes look like they look, and that we don't actually *have* to wear them when cycling, we can move on to more important questions.
Like, why don't bicycles have steering wheels like cars?

My wife and I are buying touring bikes
Nothing too far or too hilly
So we are not going to race anywhere.
To wear such ugly clothes must be important function wise...... none of this explains why wearing such tight fitting ball pitchers.
And the tight fitting feminine psychedelic shirts?
The helmet I understand.
The clip in shoes?
Over the top. Even pedal clips can stay at home. As they will not work with my flip flops.
You don't post that we've decided to invest our time, effort, and money towards a commitment to cycling. Instead you post.
I am more of an in for a penny... in for a pound type of guy myself. If the whole idea of cycling isn't calling to you... maybe you'll just be wasting your time and money. So... why bother.
But I finding cycling to be a real addictive experience that has morphed into a lifestyle. I'd suggest you jump in with both feet! Open the wallet wide (if you can afford that) and wear the gear. Don't worry about how, or how well, cycling gear and tech fabric work. It's all part of the cycling experience. Just jump in and have fun.
DO EXPECT SORE PARTS! Sure the right gear/clothing/saddle and a bit of knowledge and a metered approach to exercise will help moderate the learning curve (pronounced "pain"). But make no bones about it. Cycling is a blood sport. Expect blood, sweat, maybe a tear or two, pain, healing....... and gratification, satisfaction, empowerment, and pride. Expect to look silly in cycling clothes.... and expect to be proud of being identified as a cyclist.
Whatever you do... I wish you luck.

Thanks Dave. And understood. We are sold on the idea. And intent to try and have some fun. The first bike arrives on Tuesday. We are planning routes, checking out clothing options, checking out where we can buy stuff for the bicycles like wider thyers. The list never seems to stop. O yes. Waterproof breathable jackets and this combo of features do not come cheap in a jacket.

You can wear proper clothing for road cycling without wearing rolling billboards or jerseys that look like someone smoking acid designed. I personally think 90% of the ones I see look ridiculous. Black shorts, subdued jerseys. If you want to be seen put a blinky light on your bike.
I got a few of these Road Holland jerseys a few weeks ago when they were going out of business.

I don't buy into the argument that if you don't like cycle clothing, don't cycle.

I almost feel I'm replying to troll.
Wear what you want, don't wear anything if you want.
Took me a long time to break down and realize there is a reason for cycling clothing/shoes.
I fought it for years, baggy gym shorts, cotton t-shirts, sneakers, you know, I wanted to be a rebel.
Started with the shoes, hmm, I can be more efficient when pedaling using cycling shoes. Then the shorts, little padding though, today, lots of padding and wouldn't think of a long ride without them.
The shirt, wait till you get a cool day and start sweating with a cotton t, you'll think of this post.
