Kind of looks wobbly in the video.
What is the advantage of a hubless bike? I have to think that a hubbed wheel has less friction and (via the spokes) better shock absorption.

I assume the demo rider was competent, but perhaps not (sneakers may be a give-away). He was struggling to keep that beast tracking in a straight line. Could be the polymer airless tires that look kind flat. Also, the pedaling motion was not very smooth. Can't tell how the power is transmitted but could be some engineering tweaks still to be done.

Fully funded on Kickstarter.

Hubless wheels seem pretty common in design-school work and concept cars and motorcycles. You can think of it as working like a tank tread.

Maybe the drag in this kind of wheels had him wobbling. I've always thought hubless wheels look great since Sbarro put them on cars, but if it's got no real technical advantage, is won't make it. I see possibilities for folding bikes though.

They've come here to talk about their 'smart bike' before, I guess that didn't excite anyone so now you can store groceries in your wheels.

Which is of course possible with spokes too, onions and leaks will fit just fine, the reason we don't is because it looks odd.

That wheelbase, tho.

And I think we should all take a moment to appreciate that Sneaker Man is riding that bike in one of those Morphsuits.

Also, where the brakes at, and how do you activate them?

I think that's the fairing/bearing/whatever around the wheel. The tire is only visible right up against the ground.

Gotcha.

So this isn't the tire but a cover over the tire?

Now rocks and debris can get stuck between the tire and the cover. Brilliant.

Ugliest bike award of 2016?

That thing honestly is fugly in the light. Looks cool at night, but TERRIBLE in the day.

How does it work? How do the brakes work? How do the wheels stay true?

Rider in the video was incompetent, couldn't even keep it in a straight line.

Also, I'd like to know how it tracks your heart rate? Through the saddle? haha

Either that or the bike has serious handling issues.

The wobble at 1:08 in the video is hilarious. Nobody could ride that thing smoothly. The geometry is seriously screwed up.

Back in paleolithic times it was called a "fen-der"

maybe similar to the heart rate monitors on the handles of gym cardio machines?

And I swear if you pay attention to his hands vs the front wheel, the wheel is moving at least twice as much as the handlebars. Seems a little flexy

Ahh, yes.
Nothing says "industrial design student" like drawing vehicles with hubless wheels.

This guy gets a gold star for actually building one (a task that is far beyond most industrial design students' abilities) but I doubt that he puts a lot of miles on it. Or carries a lot of groceries....

Think of a gondola riding up the cable. Replace the cable with a rim. The rim has to be very strong, and so do the guide wheels that are clamped onto the rim. At a guess, the wobble we see is because there's some give in the clamping mechanism.

Looks like the Bowflex of bicycles. An unconventional design that's all about superficial appeal and doesn't work as well as conventional designs.

Innovation in separating the fad-prone from their money.
