I try to keep up with my bike ... That's why I don't get a faster bike, it might outpace me.

On my standard road bike, about 17.5-18.5mph.
On my recumbent lowracer, about 18.5-20mph.

I'm 46, slightly overweight, and not the tallest guy out there.

End of last year riding with 3 other guys I ride with a lot we averaged 20 flat for 20-30 miles on most rides with moderate climbing. Over here 300-500 per 10 miles is about what to expect. If we hit some of the trails along the river that are flat we were a bit faster. Solo I'd be 18.7-19.

Then I crashed pretty hard, did some damage to my right shoulder and I've been off for 3 months because I can't ride squat at the moment. I'd do 10 miles at a time on the trainer sitting up so keep weight off but that was miserable so I just quit.

Feeling better finally, going to start again this week and work my way up but speed has probably dropped off significantly, probably a 16mph guy again for a bit.

Flat is typically 26-27km/h? I forget exactly, but it's somewhere around there.

It's the human condition.
Even those of us trying to be accurate have to rely on a memory that forgets bad days quickly.
So our remembered average is higher in most cases than our real average.

Myself excepted, of course.

Man, I'm slow!

I average 10-12 mph over 35 miles. Maybe 14-16 mph for short flat streches without wind, but that is pushing it not "cruising." Without my rear panniers, front handlebar bags, and extra water, my bike weighs 52 pounds, though. (Yes, I just weighed it.) Really lusting after a road bike...not that I want to race or anything. I just would like to see the difference in going from my wide tires (formerly 2.1" and now 2.5") and heavy frame with racks and fenders to something svelte.
