I only ride superior and/or exceptional annual miles... who has time for "average"?

On average, how many miles do you ride per year?

Honest question: why does anyone care about anyone else's annual mileage?

Doctor Morbius 10-05-18 05:52 PM

This year I've ridden 677 actual miles (not trainer miles) since April 29th, so I'm down since last year. However, even though I'm riding fewer miles, I'm riding faster miles.

Last year between June 18th and October 21st I rode 1057 miles.

Holy mole-y! That's a lot of miles. (My apologies if someone already made that joke. I haven't read the whole thread yet).

I usually go with Avocado's Number. Which is one. On toast. Post-ride.

Do you even average bro!?

Fwiw I've just clocked past 5,000 miles but I'm tired from summer! Hope to hit just over 6,000 for 10km. It will be close!

Paul Barnard 10-05-18 07:24 PM

I have no idea. I mix it up between 3-4 bikes. This summer saw me riding a good bit. I'll be out of the saddle for the rest of the year come mid-month.

02Giant 10-05-18 07:37 PM

Average riders average their miles.

Ritalalala 10-05-18 09:04 PM

About 3500-4000miles in a year

Troul 10-05-18 09:21 PM

a mean of 4k miles

NoWhammies 10-06-18 03:29 PM

6,000km or so.

chezzy79 10-07-18 12:56 AM

Started this month, my goal is to hit 1000 miles before the end of the year

if you need a mole ... . great, I guess.

But if you need a lawyer ... you really need that number.

This year however has been a bust because this winter I developed a weakness in my neck muscles supporting my head upright (perhaps due to a two month unavoidable layoff) on my previously well-fitted bikes.

I had a subsequent fitting on both, with some handlebar adjustments. I recently got an exercise consultation for neck, shoulder and core muscles, and was given an exercise routine, that takes a big chunk of 50 minutes to perform. Exercise may fix it, but that’s a long-term solution.

All these remedies have barely allow me to ride my minimum 14 mile one-way commute with slight discomfort near the end. By this time of the year I'm doing weekly 50-60 mile rides easily, and even training for a Century.

Just yesterday, I rented a hybrid style bike with flat handlebars, and was comfortable on the commute, even with a moderately heavy backpack.

So now I’m giving in to the idea of a flat bar bike…

It should be adequate to usher me into a steady Winter Riding schedule. :D

My optimal riding schedule is:

In reality though, I have posted on a few of occasions:

Having a mileage-based training schedule however, effectively motivates me to make time to ride. I have the opportunity to commute a minimal 14 miles one-way during the week (Commuter Rail home), and round-trip on Saturday all year-round, for about 100 miles a week.

During the nice weather, I’d like to put in about 150-200 miles to train and do long rides.

In reality though, I probably get in about 20-30 miles per week during the winter, and maybe about 75-100 during the nice weather (to include early evening rides).

BTW, on my post to that above-mentioned thread, “Average Commuter Miles," I also quoted a Commuting Forum thread, “Commuting Safely Impacting Recreational Fun?”

So with 12 weeks left in the year (minus one week when I can’t ride) if I buckle down and intensively cycle-commute I can recoup this year similarly with about 1000 miles; if I do the above “usual” winter average it’ll only be about 300.:giver:

Gosh, I have it good.

I particularly agree with your assessment of weekly mileage, though at over 150 miles per week, I call it hyper-fit ...

Carpethediem 10-07-18 09:58 AM

These days only about 1,000 miles. Most of my rides are hauling my two little ones in a Burley trailer.

wipekitty 10-07-18 02:41 PM

2008: ~1000
2009, 2010: ~3500/year
2011: ~2000
2012, 2013: ~1000/year
2014: ~3000
2015, 2016: ~4000/year
2017: ~6000
2018: On target for 6000+

It's worth mentioning that from late 2010-2016, I insisted on only riding fixed gear bikes. My time only increased slightly in 2017 :)

DrIsotope 10-07-18 03:35 PM

^^^ Now see, that seems like a logical progression. I KNOW NOTHING OF LOGIC. Working on my fourth year...

2015: 7,700 miles
2106: 11,800 miles
2017: 10,100 miles (lost 8 weeks to a broken hand)
2018: 7,816 miles (as of 10/7)

Barring unforeseen circumstances, should finish up 2018 at right about the same mileage as 2017.

zen_ 10-07-18 03:59 PM

2018 was the first year I broke 1K. Hoping to at least double that next year with more commuting, and longer trail rides.

RFEngineer 10-07-18 09:34 PM

2000 miles, 200k feet climbing is the goal. I have two kids under 5 and I don't see how I could do any more.

FlMTNdude 10-08-18 04:51 AM

5000-5500. Of that 3500-4000, depending on weather, is commute.

esmith2039 10-08-18 06:12 AM

Shoot for 2k but typically average between 2-3k. Last year was 3100. Probably 2500 this year.

mstateglfr 10-08-18 07:42 AM

I average half as many as i wish I had time for.

Kobe 10-08-18 11:27 AM

The past few years I have averaged 4,000 miles, I was shooting for 4,500 this year but every weekend it seems rain around here.

Last couple of years I've bit the bullet & just risked it more if the forecast suggested rain over a certain %. As long as the wind was favorable & I did not foresee any lightening happening, Even if temps were iffy, I'd still ride it out.
Since doing so, I've been able to enjoy more rides.

+1, and I'm retired! I still have time/effort responsibilities outside of biking. How does one have time to log 6,000 mi/yr? :foo:
