Adding Bar ends to drop bar sides

Hey I have an idea to make a hybrid bar. I want to add bar ends to the sides of my drop bars at the top part. This would create both a straight handlebar for comfort and a drop bar for speed. Anyone tried this and can you think of any problems ill encounter?

Unless there is some hinge design I am unaware of, you will have to remove the brake levers in order to slide the bar ends on. And there's the question of whether bar ends will actually fit a drop bar, even old style 26.0mm bars.

Then there's the question of whether it will actually be more comfortable than the existing tops.

But give it a shot. I'd love to see how it turns out!

I think this is an excellent idea, and I encourage you to proceed. Here's some inspiration:

Why not put drop bar-ends on a flat bar, since that's what they're designed for?

I smell a troll .. Picture is a cheap steel bar may be 7/8* Tube , like flat bars 1" center

decent drop bars a 15/16"* with 26mm or 1.25" centers..

Yup, Inverse... , there are Drop Bar ends for straight bars, But the brakes stay up on the straight Bar.

What kind of Shop do you have to make your Ideas In?

* metric equivalency 22.2 23.8..

It sounds like a dumb idea. You already have a flat part of the drop bars

If you are for real ... Do it. Why ask here? If you have an idea for a ground-breaking improvement, of Course, by definition no one else has heard of it, and likely no one else can see it as clearly as you. Build ti ... then photograph it and post here.

Quick questions---Do you realize that the resulting bar will be wider than most MTB bars? Do you know you can buy wider drop bars? How wide are your current drop bars? Might to be better served with a flat bar and bar ends? or maybe raising your current bars.

How do you find your current bar uncomfortable? Is your bike adjusted properly to your body and your riding style?

You don't mention what you ride. Please, post a picture and some information. Then people can better figure out what the situation is and how to possibly improve it.

I don't see any advantages. I'm perfectly happy to ride with my hands on the tops of the bars (straight section), or on the corners or hoods or drops.

Having extra pegs sticking out to snag on something?

What about brakes? You can buy interrupter brakes if you're uncomfortable reaching for the brakes from the tops of the bars. But, your extensions wouldn't have brakes.

here's my daughter's bike with Nitto Noodle bar and interruptor levers - Noodle is the perfect bar for interruptor levers, because the straight drops down a bit on each end, making a very natural palm position. These are 42cm, the bars are also available in 44 and 46 cm.

Drop bars typically have a 23-something grip area diameter while flat bars are 22.2 mm. At the very least you'd need to enlarge the clamps. You might have a problem with getting the bar ends over the bends on the drop bar anyhow.
It'd be easier to start with a flat bar and some drop bar ends. It usually doesn't take much - if anything - to slide a bar end further on.

Well if you're going to FUBAR it up you might as well go all the way and do it up right. You can get baskets, handlebar streamers, and axle pegs at Walmart. I think they have Buzz and Woody handlebar-mounted horns too. Oooo, some old baseball cards clipped to the seatstay and flapping in the spokes with a clothespin will give it a nice motorcycle sound.
