Is this bike a good deal?

https://providence.craigslist.org/bik/5991814388.html

I talked the guy down to $80. I was just a bit worried about the seat. (see last picture) Is that an easy fix? Does the bike look good? This is my first bike so I don't know much.

Basic seats are inexpensive. 80.00 seams fair.

Might be worth $80 ... you might have to put some money into it ... can't tell from the photos. Does everything work? Are the tires worn or dry-rotted? Do they hold air for several hours? Are cables sticky or gritty? Do the handlebars and pedals spin easily but don't shake? How rusted in the chain?

The bike is certainly used but doesn't appear to have been abused ... from the photos. Really cannot tell. i see rust and dirt, but the grips and pedals don't look all chewed up ... but hard to tell from the photos.

What do you plan to do with it? Why do you want it?

Does it fit you?

What else is on CL for about the same money in your area? Is the price in line with other old, beat-up bikes?

Go to pretty much any local bike shop and tell them you are looking for a low cost saddle. They'll have a box of OEM saddles they have taken off of new bikes. We used to sell them for $5.00 or $10.00 but that was a while ago.

Thanks, is that all that is needed to fix the seat? I can't tell from the pictures.

Bike, $80. Chain, $10. Tires, $20. Tubes, $6. Maybe some gears, $20. Sure, I'd buy it if it fit my needs.

$80 looks fair, but a little high. Not a smashing deal, anyway. I usually bargain hunt, so would be looking for a bike for less money that needed a little more in repair.

Of course, local markets vary. Old mountain bikes / hybrids are pretty cheap here. Old roadies go for a lot more.

Might need to get some new derailleur cables also. It appears the front derailleurs cable is rusting. Might be a good idea to replace the rear one as well if it's stretched.

Yes, just a new saddle - the damage is around the springs it looks.

The bike looks like it hasn't been used much. Very clean. The tires still have the rubber nub things, so they probably haven't been ridden much. That doesn't mean they aren't old/dry-rotted though. So check that...
I would replace the cables as they seem to have rusted, and clean up the back gears as they have a bit of rust too. Otherwise it looks okay, from the pics anyway. You'll of course want to inspect everything.

Not sure about the price, but it doesn't seem too high. This is a large bike though so make sure it fits above all else.

It's a "Diamond Back" logo, not "Diamondback". That's the early logo for the current Diamondback company which dates this bike back to early 90's. The tires are probably OEM and are probably over 20 years old, meaning even if the hold air, they should be replaced. Have a bike shop check the chain to see if it's worn out. Other than those two and general tune up, it should be a rugged bike certainly worth $80, not much more. Don't worry about minor rust on the gears, buy some chain lube, run it into the chain and all that rust will come right off.
Old MTBs or Hybrids from that era are inexpensive and very sturdy. We see them all the time in our church's Bicycle Ministry. Once the repairs are complete these bikes go on to serve their new owners for years.

assuming it's a:

1993 Diamondback Cross Country Hybrid

then at: www.bicyclebluebook.com it shows:

$265 new

https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/Sear...eMax=20000&ss=

USED:
Excellent $46 - $48
Very Good $44 - $45
Good $40 - $41
Fair $29 - $30

https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/Sear...eMax=20000&ss=

the ad says "overall good condition".

If year is 1995, add about $4-$5 to each above.

I use this as a guide, local market demand determines sale prices. Could be higher/lower

I have never found BBB to make any sense, at least for my market. You are not touching any excellent condition mid-90s MTB/ATB for $50 in my market, at least not on any sort of regular basis.

Where I am, assuming only consumables and the seat needs replaced, I'd say that one is worth the negotiated price. This is assuming you are doing your own work, if you are using a shop, I wouldn't buy it.
