difference in wheelset prices
 

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a set of Zonda wheels and while shopping around I noticed some big differences in the price. Can anyone explain how probikekit can sell the same set of wheels 150 bucks cheaper than wiggle? Am I missing something here?

Perhaps you're looking at a disc brake version.

Odd, Ribble is generally pretty consistent, but they do seem to be higher for the non disc version, but significantly lower for the disc version.

Perhaps the MSRP makes it all more complicated, with them offering a "discount" from the MRSP, as well as the disc//non-disc versions with different prices.

If you switch the shipping option to Canada on wiggle the price jumps to $477.85. Ironically, a green rectangle displaying "Free delivery to Canada" is displayed right above the price.


On probikkekit the price is actually $4 lower if shipping to Canada compared to US.


I guess wiggle is not the best choice for Canadians?

You can look at prices on other items. Wheels are usually light, but bulky to ship (as are frames and whole bikes).

"Free Shipping" is not free to someone.

I've heard that US shipping to Canada can be a hassle at times. Can you get a mailbox across the border? But then, you would still have to go collect the stuff.

Living in Canada, from personal experience, I'd buy from ChainReactionCycles and use Duty Paid shipping, that way you get your wheels very quickly with no extra cost from dhl.

They are 535 CAD there though.

Well I just had a very unpleasant chat with one of wiggle's reps so I'm sure I won't be buying from them.


Duty paid on ChainReactionCycles is CA$165 on a CA$535 item so the whole transactrion would run me about CA$700 which is not cheap either.


On probikekit, the wheelset is CA$468.49 so the duty fees should be lower as well.

That does seem excessive from CRC.

I bought my Fulcrum Racing Quattro lg in late 2015 for roughly $315 from Wiggle, free shipping. I ended up having to pay $80 of taxes, duties and handling. Just to give you an idea.

Of course if they didn't treat you well... No reason to give them your business.

DHL had made the delivery. They're very fast and the box was in perfect condition, I will say that much.

Chain Reaction has started doing location based pricing so I'm not surprised Wiggle is doing it too. Big ticket items jump hundreds of dollars more than the exchange when you change the shipping location from US to Canada. Several threads about this around.
Buy elsewhere, don't get ripped off by them.

I have ordered from the big three in Great Britain and never had to pay duty. Fifty percent of the time the package was just delivered. Lately though I have to pay Canadian tax and a small brokerage feel leveled by the Canadian Post Office (not more than 10 dollars). These were small packages and I see on the website there is the option of having them mail it to you with a small chance duty might be leveled in Canada. On large items, you will always pay duty.

If you are close to the border as others have suggested having them sent to US and then you pick them up is an option. When you cross the border back into Canada, you are legally required to pay sales tax unless you stay in the US for three days. It seems to be getting harder and harder to find the deals.

Wouldn't I still have to pay duty as well when crossing back into Canada?


I'm still looking but it looks like CA$468 delivered to my address + duty, on probikekit is the best option for now.

I've bought wheels from both Merlin and Probikekit. Sometimes if you can wait a few weeks a really good sale will happen. I will say that I'm 2 for 3 in terms of shipment. One set got lost forever and when they finally arrived they looked like this. Needless to say they quickly refunded me and told me to chuck the wheels. Hopefully this was a one off experience.
