Bike Rack Help
 

I have used the search function and read many of posts. Thanks to these I have found that I need a hitch mounted on the back of my van for the 4-5 bikes for my family. I used etrailer and found the 2" Here. Now I need to decide on a rack.

I have a wife and 3 kids: 7, 5 and 3. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on a good system that this hitch will support for my family. I am willing to think short term, but would like to get something that will be of use to us for many years.

Am I right in thinking I need a 2" hitch? It seems like the cost isn't any different, why not?

A 2" receiver is preferred in my opinion because it gives you more options. Many bike racks with 1.25 " receivers are limited to hauling only 2 bikes. Some will hold four, it depends on the design. REally there is no difference except that the square is bigger on the 2". It is also more common.

I like the 1.25" because it is less conspicuous. IOW, my 1.25" receivers (on my Chrysler cirrus and Pontiac Montana) are barely noticeable. The 2" ones are a bit more of an eyesore although not bad. It really all boils down to your choice.

I am looking to carry 5 bikes in the future and just thought that the bigger ones were stronger/could carry a larger load, is that not the case?

Yes. Get the 2". Is this a fullsize van or minivan? Forget it. Get the 2" either way, for exactly the reason you suspect.

Having said all that, I know nothing of what 4 or 5 bike racks are available. I like the 2 bike yakima on the back of my girlfriend's subaru.
