29er wheels for Boston commuting

Friend of mine popped some spokes, which led to the rim bending. This on his mid-level specialized mountain bike with 29er wheels. He commutes (about 10 miles, I think) on Boston city roads. Mix of good to rough pavement. Maybe a little taller than average guy and probably pretty fit, too (so not a Clyde, but not elfin either).

Any recommendations for a good, mid-level 29er wheelset to replace the old wheelset?

Now, he has a very good job, but also 4 kids (one in college, and the rest lining up...) so a good wheelset that won't require him to tell one kid he's on his own for college would probably be appreciated.
