What should I buy that will go from box to gears to road,,, ty

26x1.5, or so, is a good size for slick tires.

You can also go with somewhat larger tires. 26x2.0

Make sure the sizes are written in decimals (MTB tires) (ISO 559), and you should be fine. Avoid tires with sizes written in fractions.

No need for bumpy tires on the road.

Your rims will accept a range of tire widths, probably from 26x1.3 up to 26x2.1. For road use only you don't need knobby tires, or even tread; so a slick tire would be the fastest choice. For road only, I used to recommend Primo Comets, but that was when they were $25-30, not at their current going price of 50 or 60 bucks.

If you keep the new tires close to the size of your old tires, you can re-use the tubes. Just be careful to not damage them when you're dismounting the old tires or mounting the new ones.

That's nuts being pretty close to the original price for the bike. In any case, you can find a good selection of reasonably priced tires and tubes for your bike at Niagara Cycle mail order bike store. That's where I buy my tires for such bikes. I usually order a couple of tubes when I buy a pair of tires as it doesn't add much to the shipping fee.
