If it's already raining before the ride starts, NO. If the forecast calls for heavy rain, NO. If I'm already out and get caught in it, I finish the ride and make the best of it.

Of course I do ride in the rain because I'm a commuter/touring cyclist and get caught out in the rain a lot, but almost never start in a rain, unless I'm on a tour and it's day-after-day of raining -- you can only sit around for so long.

I don't mind getting wet, nor do I mind if my bike gets wet -- it's all about the road grim getting on my bike and stuff. I'll go for a run in the rain, but won't ride my bike.

I was out on the bike today and as I was headed home I noticed that the clouds were getting darker, so I picked a route that would get me home quicker, but about 2-miles out it hit and it hit hard; I was freakin' pissed. However, I decided to just add another 10-miles to my ride -- what the hell, it's the same amount of work to clean me and the bike, regardless if I ride 1 mile in the rain or 10.

It's been raining here a lot lately, but the weatherman said it wouldn't rain until later in the evening, but I don't blame him...after all, this is a profession where they get paid to be wrong:roflmao2:

Generally I'll ride in rain without thunder/lightning. Rode in a heavy storm yesterday. Hit a mud patch in a corner at speed, bike spun out from under me and I fractured my elbow.

Once I'm cleared for riding again, I'll probably still ride in the rain. But I might be a bit more cautious in the corners.

Once I get the fenders on my bike sure, why not?

Cigarguy 06-15-17 12:19 AM

I got full fenders on my hybrid and prefer to ride outside in sun, rain or snow vs a gym. If I have to ride then I have to ride but if it's optional, it depends on the rain. If it's a light warm summer rain that's more of a sunny drizzle than a full on monsoon, I actually quite enjoy riding in the rain. Proper gear and equipment is key. If it's a cold almost sleety rain, no thanks.

I'm with you. I'd rather ride in the rain than in the gym. Rarely any cold rain here in S. Fla.

That really sucks, heal quickly.

A lot of people seem to mention fenders as a viable means to ride in the rain comfortably. I don't get it.

I've used fenders before and they do nothing to keep the road grim off me and my bike, especially the drive train. I can see them possibly helping if you ride around very slowly (how slowly depends on how much water is on the street), but that speed just isn't an option for those of us that use the bike for transportation, not recreation.

I ride in the rain. I ride in storms. I spent years doing bad weather rides inside on a trainer. This year I said enough was enough. It took a bit of getting over the fear of taking a spill, but I did it. My big advice:

1. In warmer weather, rain jackets and pants are overrated. You'll get as wet sweating as you will just getting rained on. A light hardshell vest or jacket does me just fine for trapping a little heat if the rain turns cool. I do toe covers, but your socks will get wet.

2. Paint lines, wood bridges and any metal surface will be slippery. How slippery is more about your bike and your handling. I've gone down on ice, but managed to keep upright on the paint, wood and metal -- use caution until you get a feel for it. If you can't avoid these obstacles, slow down to a comfy "falling speed" before you get to the obstacle, do your best to relax, avoid directional changes, and forget about the brakes until your clear.

3. Lights. In bad weather you are less visible than in good weather. Have good lights for front and rear, at least.

I've been told YOU NEED wider tires for slippery situations. I ride 700x25 and so far no issues.

Riding in bad weather is "level-up" stuff. I was surprised at how good I felt after conquering my first real storm ride.

Yeah ... after about 15 years of it, that wears off. :)

It has been raining every evening for the past week. Every evening I look at the sky ... and think of sodden socks and water-filled shoes, and pass.

I need to go back to flat pedals, rat traps, and sandals.

Thanks for the sympathies. It is a super minor fracture, luckily -- no cast necessary and doc says I might even be back on the bike in as little as 4 weeks.
