Bike rack
 

I have just leased a new convertible. Because it's leased car I can't install a hitch and because it's a convertible, a roof rack is out of the question. The last two clamp-on racks I had scratched the heck out of the trunk lid.

I never transport the bike more than a few miles. Can anyone recommend a rack that won't cost me a fortune when I turn in my car?

I use a Saris Bones on my Miata convertible.

go to craigslist. check the bikes and bikes and bike parts subsections. type in 'bones' in each and see what hits. Saris Bones go for $70-100 here.

They are popular for a reason.

Saris Bones is excellent (I have it) PROVIDED THAT THE TOP OF YOUR BUMPER IS NEARLY HORIZONTAL.

This is not the case for my 2014 Mustang GT (the bumper has the 'melted' look) and it requires a lot more tension in the straps which made me uncomfortable. I have a hitch mounted Thule now.

I still use the Saris Bones for my wife's BMW 328i.

The hitch mounted Thule is your best bet but you'll have to install a receiver on your car if it doesn't already have one. You can get one installed for under $100. That's what I did on my Miata.

Distance no more then a few miles?
Is biking to the location an option?
Adding microfiber cloth/padding under the rack should prevent scratching.

Another vote for the Saris Bones. There are two versions; the original 3-bike one with the two upper legs, and the 2-bike version with one upper leg. Both are extremely versatile and will almost certainly work on your vehicle. I've seen them on CL for as little as $50 used, but purchased new they cost quite a bit more.

+1 on Seasucker, though it needn't be a hardtop; there are trunk deck mount possibilities.

Another vote for the Saris Bones. I have this and use it frequently. Easy on, easy off, no scratches and the bikes are secure. The staps do "sing" while on the road. Haven't figured that out yet.
