I hook my Califone up to my dyno light generator and set it on my front rack. I only use it to play Air Supply records.



If one listens to music that is dependant on stereo sound, you may want to get one of those adaptors for your earphone that converts stereo to mono.

I;ve got one by osiris co. It rocks when mountain biking, partying in the middle of nowhere and scaring/annoying the diehard triathletes who show up at the century ride.

I use my mini disc player when I am doing really long rides on backroads on my touring bike but other than that no. And even on those rides I use only the right ear so I can hear cars as they approach me. I have a hearing loss as it is so riding my fixed gear on busy roads with headphones on would not be smart.

in hi school i would listen to entire albums in my head while cycling, especially on hilly rides...

but no headphones ever, i listen to the sounds around me when outside. sometimes i sing.

once i had a radio-shack bike radio. it was hilarious to ride home in rush hour traffic listening to NPR. until the novelty wore off and the clamps broke.

its rare that someone will pass me on the path. so i don't give an eff who's behind me. but in traffic, you have to keep your game sharp. the second you slip your going to get doored, or pinned, or crowded or SOMETHING bad is going to happen.

i wear headphones. i ride in the city. i like it. i used to ride with a crappy cd player with no skip protection back in the day, and before that, a walkman thing. i've always done it, and feel it too quiet when i'm not listening to something.

it's a personal choice, very much like my ride or my decision to wear a helmet and ride with brakes. everyone says it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you're riding. i agree.

I have to say, I really love listening to music when I ride. I find it really puts me in a zen-like groove, and drastically improves my proverbial *flow*.

That said, despite liking it, I never ever ride in traffice with headphones. I'm thinking about rigging up a speaker that can attacth to my Chrome strap though, as it's right by my ear. I think that might work, without blocking dangerous amounts of peripheral sound.

Only on the paths, and only at very low volumes. I was joking with another forum member- my music is so low that I can't even hear half of it... I have to sing until I can hear it again, and that's good enough for me.

I like to hear the warnings and all, but I need the music most of the times. Sometimes I go without.

I always ride without on the streets.

I only do this at school where people are so shocked to see someone on a bike, they roll out the red carpet for you. In the city, it's an awful idea and people that do this should be punched before they get hit (by a car). I agree that it puts me in a groove, but I'll gladly trade that groove for being able to hear sirens, car horns, and gun shots.

All I know is it is hard enough to ride without any more intrusions. LOL

I ride with one earphone in and the other out. I only have like 10 albums on my ipod. Out of sheer laziness i haven't transferred my CDs over yet. Out of these 10 albums and depending on my mood i usually end up listening to:

-The Unicorns
-Arcade Fire
-Yo La Tengo
-The Sea and Cake
-Sometimes Belle and Sebastian and the Silver Jews

I really need to get some more stuff on there. Listening to metal while riding would be fun, so would Electroclash...

i never bike without them. even in traffic. its not safe. but either are most fun things.
lately i've been pumping neurosis, black dahlia murder, decrepit birth, comeback kid, strife, and of course, rambo.

speaking of fantasy (my prefered nomenclature is adventure) metal, 3 of the 4 times i have listened to dragonforce's fury of the storm while riding, a sudden downpour completely drenches me for the 7 minutes the song plays, then ceases. it rules. i don't even mind getting soaked because it's so appropriate.

it's been scientificaly proven that dragonforce makes your brain melt..

The streets are dead when I get off work at night, so I feel pretty safe. For a while I listened to Manowar every night but stopped when the deluded fantasies of lopping heads off of pedestrians with a broadsword and shooting arrows at other cyclists began to manifest.

Those guys are awesome, but yeah riding with music devices is just not on. Tried it once, never worked for me. :(
