Back in 2009 Cervelo had a test ride offer. Go to a participating dealer, take home a bike for two days, ride it and either return it or buy it.

That was unique because I got to take it home for two days. Had to go to a dealer maybe 40 miles away. Bike was almost ready but looked brand new, R series. Got a quick fitting and then took it home.

I did not buy it because I already had a Cervelo R series but just wanted to try out another higher end R series to see if I'm missing anything.

The other part of the deal I did not pay attention to: just by doing this bike testing, Cervelo entered me in a contest to win a drawing to go to the TdF in July 2009.

I got an email maybe later June from Cervelo that I won. So I got to go to the TdF. That was the years when Cervelo owned their Cervelo Test Team.

I wouldn't test drive a $10k bike but to size/fit something in my budget, yes.

I had tested several folding bikes before settling on a Brompton. I think it's good to see what something comparable to your initial choice rides like, because you never know, you may change your mind. I wasn't expecting to buy a Brompton, and I probably wound'nt have but the other bikes I tried simply weren't assembled properly and I didn't know what I was getting into, then I began to weigh the pros and cons.

Test them out and don't feel guilty. The sales person may appreciate the challenge of even persuading you.

Every LBS in my area have helpful sales guys that would be more than willing to help pick out the right bike. Heck, they just like to stand around and talk about bike stuff. If they know you're looking for a future purchase they probably wouldn't mind test rides.

Good bike shops do well because they establish relationships with their clientele, not just from selling bikes. The same as any other business. It's about relationships. Because when you need something fixed, or an accessory, or you just want to ask a question, you want to talk to Joe or Sarah at the LBS, someone you trust. And then every few years, maybe, you'll buy a bike.

When they lose that and only focus on sales, they usually go out of business.
