Is there a way to trim off an end segment from a Strava ride?

TimothyH 07-04-17 12:41 PM

Yes. It is very easy.

It's called cropping. Go to the spanner option and then click on crop.

You can use the slider for macro cropping, then the foward or back buttons for fine adjustment.

You cannot reverse the change unless you have saved off elsewhere the original gpx file.

Oh sorry... I mean wrench instead of spanner...

I crop my rides all the time, mostly because I forget to turn off the Garmin and I have to get rid of all those 70 mph highway miles.

I flag rides like this all the time.

One of my segments is near a mountain bike park and guys forget to turn off their GPS all the time. Speed limit in the segment is 35 MPH but one guy rode the trails and then won the segment at 65 MPH.

Ha, my issue as well. At the end of a recent, fairly long ride, thought I lost it all due fat fingering. After many expletives, just got in the car rode the five miles back to the cottage only to find I hadn't lost it and Strava logged the drive back.:p

Got it, thanks.

Is there any way to ADD time or a segment? My Strava stopped on my personal best ride & I'd love to add it.
I think it stopped searching for Wifi. This only started happening after the last Android update I use (my phone).

I have yet to discover it. The only way to complete the ride as far as the Activity Feed is concerned is to do a manual entry from one of the drop-down menus on the top right side of the screen.

I failed for some reason to turn on Strava recording on my phone for one of my rides last week. After finishing, I could refer to Machka's ride, but only for distance and time, and manually entered that information so at least I had a record that (a) shows up on the Feed, and (b) applies cumulative distance for the week/month/year for me and the bicycle I used.

I suppose, if you had the IT skills, you could call up the incomplete gpx file after downloading on your computer and see if you could add something there. But alas, I am a deadhead when it comes to that sort of thing.

Thanks for the reply. I will consider a manual add. Or I'll just leave it this time as it might give me incentive to redo the ride Friday. Just a bit frustrating since it was my Personal best (for now).

Yeah, it sucks when there is a problem and you felt good on the bike. Same with the ride I mentioned. Unfortunately, that ride was in Canada, and I am now home in Australia, so no repeating that one!

By the way, just rereading your original post, WiFi shouldn't have any influence on whether your device continues to record or not. As far as I can tell, it should be taking the information only from satellites, not the phone network, to record the ride. It can take a while for a the file to synchro with Strava, and that's when you need WiFi or a internet connection. Are you sure there wasn't an interruption to the upload? Or did you do what I did (I think) and drift a finger over the stop button?

The drift of the finger is always possible however I've never done that before. I will certainly be more careful from now on. Actually, I was also just looking at bike computers (as well as watching a replay of State of Origin match 1). Of course I mention that coincidence since you mention that you're back in Australia.

I'm Tasmanian, so shouldn't know about these things, but at the risk of offending you... C'mon The Maroons!! (I also lived in Far North Queensland for a while back in the early 1990s, and at the risk of offending even more, I find League to be far more interesting as an action sport than the sanitised AFL).

No offense taken! I really have no allegiance. I just like watching big matches/event (in any sport). Plus I'm still getting used to League rules so I'll watch as much as possible at the moment!!

As for Strava, I think I'm going to leave it. I know how I did and was pretty happy with my ride. Plus I didn't mean to 'hijack' the OP's thread. :D

I just flagged ~15 activities because people drove away from the local SS course and forgot to turn off Strava. I had a strong (top 5) ride on the road that goes past the SS trails on Friday; it sucks to have to flag all these activities.

Then don't. Likely someone else as worried as you about your virtual rankings that will do it themselves.

My GPS once put me on the MTB Strava segment that runs near a MUP, and a top-5 finish. Didn't take too long for that achievement to disappear.

I've seen the parallel road/MTB segments, I simply ignore those MTB segments. Frankly, creating a segment like that is just dumb. This road segment is safe from that issue, it's just a popular road for people driving to/from the SS trails.

I know a couple riders in my area that are the leaderboard police, flagging the people driving segments. I'm typically a live-and-let-live kinda guy, but getting top 5 on a segment with about 1000 riders .... well, my ego wants it. (embarrassing but true)

I'm curious, what does the notification for flagged activity look like?

I don't know that I ever saw one, I was just curious and kept peeking at it every week or so, until it finally disappeared. The only thing that made that stand out is I had never before had a top-10 (and as of now, still only have one legit one). I don't pay much attention to my Strava notices/classiications though, mostly I use it for YTD distances.

I expect that most people don't pay attention to Strava notifications. I know Lisa never checks hers, once in a while I log in as Lisa to help with something and see that she had dozens of unchecked notifications.

Maybe I shouldn't feel like an A-hole for flagging activities, most people will never notice. Those that care enough to notice would likely crop the driving out of the activity prior to anybody flagging it.... I'm the person that quickly crops a ride when I realize I left the Garmin on for the drive home.

Hypno Toad 09-11-17 07:51 AM

One funny update: I flagged nearly all of the activities on this segment that clearly included driving. I noticed one rider's activity title said that he forgot to turn off his Strava for the drive home. I posted a comment to his activity on how to crop the ride, and HE DID IT!! Educating Strava users, one at a time. :)

Me too. Doesn't happen that often, as I use my phone, but as my main concern about Strava is YTD mileage over all my bikes, I don't even want the extra stuff on there.

I agree, I love the millage stats. That was my first reason for using Strava and still the primary reason.

The other stuff is kinda like Candy Crush with bikes... fun but totally meaningless.

DrIsotope 09-11-17 08:00 AM

Sometimes I wish there was a step above simply flagging. Flagged yet another MTB'er yesterday, whose max recorded speed during the activity was 89.5mph. Listen mountain bike a-hole, it's bad enough you forgot to hit "end ride" again, but 30mph over the speed limit? Really?

I will admit to being slightly crushed when I realized that first top-10 was not really one :thumb:

It is nice to see how you stack up against others, as long as you don't put much into the results. I feel good that I am in roughly the top quarter of most of my commonly cycled routes, but have never really felt the need to go and better that. If I am racing against anyone, it is against myself.
