can cycling shorts be used for swimming?
Hi everyone. I have a question. This month an outdoor swimming pool will be opening in a park that I like to ride through, it is a Olympic size pool and what I was wondering is would the clorine from the pool damage the shorts?

Probably not good for them. Could fade the color too.

Though the chlorine could still fade them...if you want a multi use short, try something like the PI Tri short....you can pick them up for under $40 at Performance, they dry quickly, etc. Not the best for a century ride...but work well for a multi use short.

I don't think there's a lot of difference in material between a swimsuit and cycling shorts. I would not be too concerned about fading. However, you might be more comfortable on the rest of your ride if you took a swimsuit so as not to have a wet chamois.

If you need something for multi-use, I'd suggest some tri shorts. I just picked up a pair for $30 at www.tri-at.com and they work great. The pad is thin and small compared to regular shorts, so I wouldn't suggest them for longer rides, but they dry quickly when wet and offer decent comfort for shorter rides.

Regular shorts are somewhat like wet diapers after a swim (tried it once), and I bet all kinds of nasty chafing can occur on your wet ride home. I wouldn't recommend it.
