Insanely cheap deals in ebay?

I was shopping on ebay today and I was in search of a 5800 crank set and I found one for 16 dollars! Look at this on eBay Shimano 105 5800 Double Compact Road Bike Crankset - Black eBayk | eBay
I think that's too cheap to even be real. And then I happened to find a road bike for 38 dollars! Look at this on eBay BEIOU 700C Road Bike 5800 11S Racing Bicycle T800-M40 Carbon Aero18. | eBay

Price too good to be true?
Zero feedback seller?
Long lead time?

These are all signs of a scam. Place the order, seller disappears. You'll wind up filing a claim to get your money back for an order that never came, but you'll have to wait 'til the end of the promised delivery range (6-8 weeks out) to file the claim.

Product details given are for highonbikes.com which seems like a real shop in the UK but the ebay details are for a china address. If anyone wants something fun to do they can email highonbikes (don't message via ebay) and ask if the ad is legit.

Anyone remember the guy who ordered a dirt cheap groupset (around $50) maybe half a year ago? My how we made fun of him for falling for such an obvious scam.

This has a lot of similarities to that earlier scammer. Multiple ebay accounts consisting of random letters and numbers, copied text from a legit seller, Chinese, no feedback seller, stupidly low price.

Location is China with zero (0) feedback.

The thing is, China now has the technical know-how and the capacity to replicate just about any product or widget....with quality too now. And, it takes an expert to tell the real from the fake, as has been the case for years though.

That auction checks all of the "RUN AWAY!" boxes:

-origin: China
-joined eBay: barely a month ago
-seller feedbacks: Zero
-description: used, but shows Shimano stock photography, of an incorrect item

That listing isn't too good to be true, it's not even trying to disguise it's scamminess.

Adding to what I said earlier this is the genuine link to the 105 crankset that the scammer has copied:

Thanks guys, I knew something was fishy lol. I thought it was one of those things that people are giving away things they don't want for bargain prices without caring about the money

There is a least one long thread of someone taking one for the team and relaying his experiences in this forum. The outcome was predictable.

I would avoid anything Chinese on eBay. I bought some bike helmet lights for cheap from a vendor in China and those things were garbage. But... I've bought items from China on Amazon with good results. I got a Camelbak generic for cheap last year and I use it quite a bit.

If you want to gamble, send me that money, and I'll at least send you some random box of crap in return...

But as @smarkinson mentioned, it usually isn't too difficult to find an identical listing of a legit product at a much higher price that the scammer has simply copied and pasted. Often times it is a literal copy paste, spelling mistakes and original seller identification included. You't think with all the plagiarism filters that teachers have at their disposal these days, eBay could implement something similar for their own listings and pics.

I don't know. I recently bought a cat toy from China over eBay and the meezer seems pretty impressed with it

Seriously, I have bought bike stuff from China and haven't been burnt, but I've always been very careful too, which is why I haven't bought more from China. The old adage applies - you get what you pay for. In this case, if it says it's Shimano 105 and you pay a fraction of what it's worth, you can't really complain if you find it's a knock off, particularly if it does the job.

...but he'd have reason to complain if he received nothing at all, which is what he'd probably get if my past experience with similar scammers holds true.

I've bought some okay bicycle stuff on eBay, all of it brand-name from reputable dealers in not-China (but Canada and Ukraine). The prices are never fantastic but free shipping on small orders makes it cheaper. I've gotten some worthless bike lights from China.

I've seen those ridiculous deals too and wonder how the sellers are able to profit from their scam. Whenever I've sold stuff on ebay to buyers who use PayPal, I don't get my money until delivery is confirmed. AND, when you are a new seller, PayPal keeps your money for up to 21 days to make sure the deal was legit.

Do these scammers ever see a dime with all of these buyer protections?

Here is a crazy-cheap deal I got just a week ago, that seemed too good to be true.
This is a $35 item.
I went out to the mfgrs site and found it is no longer listed, so it was apparently discontinued.
Hmmm, maybe it is just someone dumping old stock.
So I figured $5 was something I could risk.
It arrived as a new item in original sealed packaging.
