Gnat clouds lol. Perfect description. I haven't hit any clouds while riding, thankfully, but I usually get a couple gnats here and there.
Though there is a constant gnat cloud in my backyard. A small one, a bit bigger than a basketball. Not sure why they stay right there - no water, trees/shade, etc...they just hover over the deck, darting back and forth at eye level, under the hot sun. Annoying things! |
Better a cloud of gnats than a swarm of bees. Where I used to live, you could find either.
In the summer months when the gnats came out, it was very hot and humid were I rode. Most which hit me were immediately drowned in sweat, or choked with salt. The ones I inhaled, or which found their way around my glasses into my eyes were a little more troublesome. |
Yeah it's awful. Has only happened on one path here by me, but it's so gross. I just put my head down and then just hear them pelting off my helmet. Pretty sure I've ate one too. Ewww. So nasty!

I had that happen on the Katy Trail by St Charles last year in October. It went on for 2 miles. That was one of the worst experiences that I had. I saw one lady riding with a mesh scarf on and that seemed to do the trick. I may need to steal one from my wife's dresser before my next tour.
The problem that I had this year were Japanese beetles, there weren't cloud (thank goodness) but they are aggressive and dozens would fly into me on a ride. I hate when I feel them hit inside my helmet. |

Wait, doesn't everyone ride escorted by an elite squadron of dragonflies to clear the way? Is it just me? Am I like Aquaman, but for dragonflies?
