Road bike weekends, MTB during the week?
I am toying with the idea of road biking on the weekends and MTB on the weekdays.
Reason is, I do like road biking, but the traffic has got me spooked. A delivery truck nearly brushed me 2 days ago, and a pick up truck the day before that, and I haven't got the courage to get back on the bike since.
On the weekends, I can tote my road bike to some local rail trails, and I can do the quieter backroads early in the morning. There is also the benefit of a ton of road bikers during the weekend, so traffic is prepared for it.
During the weekday, I am near a number of local forested trails, and could easily get over there to use a MTB. (I bike during my lunch break -- not lucky enough to be one of the leisure set)
Anyone else do something similar?

I do both, too. But since I have both good roads and great trails nearby, I divide time between mtb and road biking based on the wind level. On really windy days, I hit the mtb trails, and on nicer days, I'm on the road. The exception for me is weekends - I stay away from the mtb trails since they get pretty crowded with riders who aren't fortunate enough to be retired yet. I think doing both is a great way balance your needs.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays are usually road days.
The rest of the days are mountain bike time. My heart still yearns for some good single track.
It's also much quieter off road.

All depends on the level of development / traffic where you live. I'm in the middle of the 'suburbs' so during the week, between about 10am-2pm, the roads are less busy, because everyone's at work. That lets me get through some of the dicey-er areas and out to safer roads.
On the weekend, peak traffic is less, but there's more people out mid-day, so unless i'm going out really early, i'll use the car to shuttle farther out.
Not too many trails where I live now, so the MTB gets a lot more use on weekends chasing my kids around the parks.
I've been experimenting with biking to work, since i'm at new facility, that's a little more accessable, but it looks like the MTB will get the nod as the commuter as well, since the road conditions (4-6 lanes, 45mph, curbs on both sides) mean that about 1/3 of the trip will be on sidewalks.
