If I ride on bike lane slow...

If I ride slow in bike on bike lane (10~12 mph), would it annoy other cyclist? I don't want to do anything that annoy other people.

No ... it wouldn't annoy anyone.

However, just don't be surprised if people pass you.

And on that ...

1) Hold your line ... don't weave all over the lane.

2) Get a mirror so that people flying past you don't startle you.

Oh no! don't look at it like that, it's for everyone to use. If they want to go faster, they can go around. Now if your weaving side to side, that's another story.

caloso 09-06-17 10:16 PM

Nope, not me. My fellow cyclists do plenty of things to annoy me, like riding the wrong way, or on crowded sidewalks, or in all black at night without lights. But riding safely in the bike lane at your own pace, no problem.

Actually it will annoy some people. But that is their business, not yours. The bike lane is for all riders just like the sidewalk is for all pedestrians. That slow pedestrian will also annoy some people.

Get out and ride! The bike lane is for you. I may well pass you. I may be looking straight ahead, focusing on my ride, or I may look over and greet you. But I will be thinking "Good for you. You're riding."

It shouldn't annoy anyone, unless you were weaving back and forth across the lane. OTOH - if it did annoy anyone, it would be on them, and not something for you to feel bad about.

One thing to keep in mind is the basic rules of the road, so try to keep to the right, so faster riders can pass on your left.

Or the other way around, depending where you are.

Stick to the same side of the path as you would if you were driving a motor vehicle on the road. :)

So right.

However up here there's no ambiguity, the right side is the right side of the road, but where you are the right side is the wrong side, go figure.

Just do it!

There is NOTHING that you can do on a bicycle that isn't going to annoy somebody. Just be true to yourself.

Yes, it will annoy some aggressive riders. No, you shouldn't worry about annoying them, they are generally annoying others with their own riding style.

The trails are for everyone. Don't hog the middle, leave room for people to get around you on whatever side is customary for passing in your locale, and ride in a predictable manner, but don't worry about going too slow :thumb:

dabac 09-07-17 06:36 AM

Some people are AMAZINGLY skilled at getting annoyed. Your mere existence will do it.
JUSTIFIABLE annoyance will not be triggered by being slow only.
But may be triggered by weaving across the lane, straddling the lane, being generally inattentive, behaving unpredictably etc.
I'm entirely happy to do My part for passing in a safe and pleasant manner, but a touch of cooperation will make it ever so much easier.

I'd take up a different sport in that case. It's cycling--road cycling, to be specific. It is a given that, sooner or later, you will annoy somebody or that you, yourself, shall become annoyed with somebody.

:D

EXCEPT if you're riding next to a line of parked cars. Get away from the cars as much as possible to avoid getting doored.

And if you're slowing anyone down that much, they will probably simply go into the motor traffic lane to pass you if there isn't enough room in the bike lane.

jamesdak 09-07-17 08:50 AM

It shouldn't and if it does that's their problem. I choose not to use a local path because I usually avg 18-20 mph and feel like I'm the hazard on a bike path. But I certainly wouldn't get annoyed with riders slower than me or anyone else on the path. Just hold your line and be ready for others to do stupid stuff.

What I have seen trying to ride the local path, other riders two abreast head on and not getting over, cars crossing path from driveways and not looking. Kids, dogs, etc all over, walkers with headphones on hogging whole path and oblivious to others, fishermen hitting me with poles as they react to my announcement and passing, and I could go on and on. So I choose to ride the road and put up with the people that yell at me to, "get on the bike path". Have fun and just be considerate of others sharing the path with you. :thumb:

stevoo 09-07-17 08:57 AM

Nope, it will not.
Please by all means get out there and ride your bike.
Be predictable by not weaving all over the place.
Stay to the right as much as is reasonable.
Say hello to other riders.
Have fun out on your bike!
Good luck.

jack002 09-07-17 09:00 AM

Dismiss that kind of thinking. The trail is there for you. Use it as you like. Use a mirror, try to keep to the right and just riiiiide

wphamilton 09-07-17 09:06 AM

People love to pass other bikes, just read these forums for all of the variations. You're doing a public service.

DrIsotope 09-07-17 09:08 AM

Probably 90% of the people I pass on the trail are going ~12mph. Doesn't bother me at all.

I'll trade a guy going 10-12mph for a dog on an extendo-leash any day. Or the lady yesterday, with TWO dogs on TWO separate extendo-leashes. She was successfully blocking a good 16' width. Amazing.

Chuckle...

AlmostTrick 09-07-17 09:35 AM

If someone comes up behind you just turn and ask them what they are doing. Maybe you've done this already? ;)

Wileyrat 09-07-17 09:35 AM

If you're riding 10-12mph you're doing fine. If I were to pass you the worst you could expect is "on your left", and maybe an "enjoy your ride

AlmostTrick 09-07-17 09:37 AM

OP is in a "bike lane" everybody. Not trail, or MUP.

Unlike the road where the maximum speed limit is speed everyone is expected to be at least driving at, that's not the case for bike lane so you shouldn't annoy any sane person.

Hoopdriver 09-07-17 10:30 AM

The only thing that annoys me when riding in a bike lane is all of the debris that gravitates there. Other cyclists are never an issue, whether they are slow or fast, weaving or consistent. Anybody who is annoyed by another cyclist in a bike lane is not worth your consideration.
