"Rolling Coal" getting spewed in southern Ohio

About twice a week during rides in my area local country boys get endless pleasure by pulling alongside my cycling group and making their Cummins turbodiesel trucks waste diesel fuel in absurd ways causing huge plumes of black soot to waft our way.
Is this a variant of the incredibly redneck practice called "rolling coal"?

That's because "crop dusting" is ineffective in a closed vehicle.

Yep.

In California we've developed a vaccine, administered to male children at birth, that has just about wiped out the practice here. Good luck.

I got this treatment for the first time ever this past weekend. Have been riding for 45 years, but was out on a proper road bike for only the third time. Is that just a coincidence or are roadies more likely to be rolled?

Something about the lycra-spandex. Kind of like waving a red cape in front of a bull.

I live on the edge of country and see the act of coal dusting a lot. Not me on my bike yet though. One thing recently was someone putting on their windshield washer just as they passed me. I barely got a few specs of mist and if I was not already looking up and saw their wipers going I wouldn't have noticed at all. Coincidence or do people try that too?

When did Bakershole and other central valley cities secede?

Happened to me years ago in FresNo. Luckily the person had the exhaust pipes vertically behind the truck cab, not directly at cyclist level.

I'm sure it can be considered some kind of assault whether or not a cop, lawyer or judge agrees. keep complaining, maybe even tell it to the local papers and news networks. get your video on the local news and provide the journalist w plate numbers - would be interesting to see them interview those you-know-whats

Don't I know it. I was making a (little?) funny. There are places in the Sierra foothills that would do Dumbf***istan proud and where coal rolling is, unfortunately, not that uncommon.

I bet those diesel driving punks are pushing 250 pounds and haven't exercised since the 8th grade.

I don't think that vaccine is available in the 909. The Calif DMV does have a program for reporting gross polluters, if you can get the plate number you can report it. Not they they can do all that much but I think DMV sends them a letter.

Thankfully, it is pretty much reserved for Priuses around me.

If one was repeatedly doing it to me, I'd think a water bottle into the mirror would be a good remedy. Mirrors on those trucks are not cheap, and I like to think that I can justify it as self-defense.

That's not a variant... that is "rolling coal." It's stupid, it's a-holish, it's wasteful, and it pollutes the atmosphere. But look at the idiots who do it.

I bet that's likely why they do it to cyclists & joggers. They know they need to exercise to stay healthy, but don't want to do it and hate being reminded of it by seeing other people do it.

No need to advocate additional potential violence, even if it is your Right.

I agree with @Flip Flop Rider - just move on. Nothing here really. Internet babble.

Pretty bad if you are setting at a bike crossing on a trike and tail pipe height.

In the SF Bay Area, the number is 1-800-EXHAUST. It goes to the Air Resources Board, not DMV.

Someone, years ago, called that number to report my vehicle to that number and I got a letter from the Air Resources Board to inform me. The letter didn't mention any possible penalty if I remember correctly.

I wasn't rolling coal or anything... My old VW bus was literally on fire and someone reported it as a polluter. I would've appreciated it more if they called 911 instead. It was kind of fun to fill out and return the part of the letter where they asked for a voluntary response or explanation. "My vehicle was smoking because it was on fire."

Illegal in Colorado, plus it's very bad for diesel engines since diesel fuel cools the injectors. Very stupid practice.
